Bear Attacks Young Child In Tent At Private Campground
Bear Beware In Montana & Other National Parks
According to Outdoor Life, Officials in Montana tracked down and killed a black bear that attacked a three-year-old girl, on Sunday, August 11th, while she was sleeping in a tent at a private campground near Red Lodge. The attack occurred around 9:45 p.m. at Perry's RV Park and Campground, leading to the evacuation of the site. The bear was trapped and euthanized by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (MFWP) officials, who believe it was the same bear involved in the incident. The girl was taken to a hospital in Billings, but her condition remains undisclosed. MFWP's Facebook post noted that "unsecured attractants" like garbage and human food likely lured the bear into the campsite. The campground remains closed as officials continue to monitor the area for any other bears
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks emphasizes being “Bear Aware” when camping or recreating in bear country, especially at established campgrounds where large concentrations of people can attract opportunistic bears. In its guide to camping in bear country, MFWP points out that most conflicts between humans and black bears at campsites involve food-conditioned bears.
In a statement, MFWP said, “A food-laden campsite can be a bear’s death sentence. After trying scare tactics and multiple relocations, FWP wardens and biologists have to kill 10 to 12 bears each year when the animals, attracted by food, repeatedly raid campsites and put human safety at risk.”

Tourists and Wildlife Do Not Mix, Selfie Filter Provides Safety
The Jackson Hole Travel & Tourism Board has launched the "Selfie Control" Instagram filter, designed to help tourists maintain safe distances from wildlife while taking photos. Preloaded with safe viewing distances for iconic species like bears, bison, and moose, the filter helps users determine if they are too close to the animals.
If the animal appears larger on the screen than the icon, users are in the danger zone and should back up. This tool addresses the challenge of accurately estimating safe distances, as recommended by the National Park Service, which advises keeping at least 25 yards from wildlife and 100 yards from predators like bears. The filter aims to prevent dangerous encounters, especially with "tourons" who often disregard safety, leading to incidents such as bison-related injuries in Yellowstone. By making it easier to gauge safe distances, the filter is expected to enhance visitor safety and protect wildlife during the busy summer season.

National Wildfire Update: Key Insights, Safety & Prevention Tips
The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reports significant wildfire activity across the United States. As of August 13, 2024, there are 77 large active wildfires that have burned over 2.3 million acres. More than 28,750 wildland firefighters are currently assigned to wildfires. Year to date, since January, over 29,500 wildfires have burned more than 5.2 million acres in the United States, compared to 1.3 million acres during the same time frame in 2023. This is about one million acres above the 10-year average number of acres burned.
More than 25,600 wildfires have been caused by people, compared to about 3,700 ignited by lightning. As wildfires continue to threaten communities and natural landscapes, it's crucial that we all do our part to prevent new fires from starting. Remember, it only takes a single spark to start a wildfire, but together, we can prevent them.
"Warming temperatures, drier conditions, and shifts in precipitation are contributing to an increase in the frequency of large wildfires and acres of land burned in the U.S. each year," according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
So far in Fire Year 2024, 14 Unma nned Aircraft System (UAS) incursions have been reported near wildfires in 10 states. Seven of these incursions have caused firefighting aircraft to be grounded while the unauthorized drone operator was located. Unauthorized drones have no communication with wildland firefighters and pilots working on the ground and in the air. Regardless of your motivation, flying a drone near a wildfire is putting someone else's life in danger. Always Know Before You Fly and keep drones away from wildfires.

From the opening ceremony held Friday 26 July 2024 until Sunday 11 August 2024 around 10,000 athletes and an estimated 10 million visitors are converging on Paris for the 33rd Summer Olympic Games, the first time the City of Light has hosted since 1924.
The 2024 Summer Paris Olympics marks a historic milestone as it commemorates 100 years since the city last hosted the Games in 1924. This centennial celebration is more than just a sporting event; it represents a century of progress, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Olympics
NEW Olympic Sports and Olympic Sports Removed
The 2024 Paris Olympics are aiming to appeal to younger fans by showcasing sports that are "closely associated with youth and reward creativity and athletic performance," according to the official Paris 2024 website.
Debuting for the first time is "Breaking" otherwise known as "Break Dancing" and "Kayak Cross" have been added to the events.
Kayak Cross has athletes compete against one another versus a time-clock. The Kayak Cross competitors will race over white water and through obstacles.
Returning from their 2021 Tokyo Olympics debut are skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing.
Removed from the Paris Olympics after making a historic Olympic debut during the Tokyo Games is Karate. Another that will not return is Baseball, a men's only sport, as well as Softball, however both of these events are scheduled to return to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Surprisingly Equestrian Dressage is not a highly watched event. However both equestrian eventing and show jumping do fair better.

Hawaii faces significant ecological challenges due to feral hogs, which are not only disrupting native ecosystems but also promoting the spread of invasive plants. Research from the University of Wisconsin-Madison shows that areas with higher densities of feral pigs have increased nonnative plant growth, as the pigs' rooting behavior disturbs the soil and favors fast-growing invasive species. This disruption is particularly problematic in Hawaii, whose ecosystems did not evolve with large ungulates like feral hogs. Consequently, the state's fragile ecosystem struggles to recover, making it uniquely vulnerable compared to mainland states. Despite efforts, managing the feral hog population remains difficult due to their high reproductive rates.
Big-Game Mountain Lion Outfitter: Sentenced Prison Time and Fined
According to Outdoor Life, Wade Lemon, a Utah big-game outfitter, was sentenced to two months in prison and fined $10,500 for orchestrating illegal "canned" mountain lion hunts on public lands in 2020 and 2021. Lemon's hunts involved mountain lions being treed and held in place until paying hunters arrived, violating the Lacey Act. His guide, Kacey Alan Yardley, received six months probation for his role in these hunts. This isn’t Lemon’s first legal issue; he has faced multiple accusations of illegal hunting practices, including a fraudulent scheme involving Donald Trump Jr. and a black bear in 2018. Lemon has been investigated numerous times for similar wildlife violations.

Greg and his son got into archery because of the pandemic, and now that archery tags have gone on sale in Pennsylvania he wanted to give a quick reminder to all that right now is the time to be Checking your tree stand saddles, your climbers and all your gear.
Colorado has a new Big Game Season Structure that goes into effect for 2025. Nonresdent archery tags will no longer be available over the counter for Elk Archery Hunting.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission voted to end over-the-counter (OTC) archery elk tags for nonresident hunters.

How to go about trying fly fishing?
Fly fishing is often the last angler learned skill, here is the best way to get a basic start.
Find a fly fishing guide or fisherman with experience. They will typically have the gear for you to have your first lessons. Save the money from buying blindly by instead investing in learning seasoned angler.
Instead of learning from a spouse or partner; take a class or lesson from an angler that can walk you through the beginning learning. This will save me from having frustration as it can be tricky to learn the rhythm.
Practice in cleared areas with your fly rod and line without any hooks. Use an open shortcut grassed yard that allows for free movement of the line without any obstructions to catch.

Yummy Family Favorite Dessert
This recipe is from Heather Krohe, Little Rack Taxidermy, that involves everything we love about campfires without having to start a fire.
Ingredients: Marshmallows, chocolate chips, graham crackers.
Extra Add-ins: Chopped candy bars such as Reese's Peanut Butter Cups or 3 Musketeers bars.
Using a pie tin - spray first lightly with cooking spray, then layer the bottom with marshmallows, sprinkling on top chocolate chips and line graham crackers around the inside of the tin keeping ends sticking up for easy grabbing.
Heat the tin using a grill, griddle, oven or stove top until the marshmallows and chocolate are melted.
Scoop up the gooey marshmallow mixture with the graham crackers and enjoy!

Camping can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its challenges. To ensure you have the best adventure possible, here are some invaluable camping hacks and tips that we have learned. This guide covers everything from packing efficiently to being ready for unexpected circumstances in the wild.
Camping: Hacks, Tips & Tricks
Packing the right way can make or break your camping trip. Here’s how to pack and be prepared.
Create a Camping Checklist: A Comprehensive list of essentials.
Hack: Flashlights & Headlamps - Test batteries, then after trip remove batteries and use painters tape to tape batteries to the lights for next use to avoid corrosion.
Ice: How to keep food cold is always an issue. Consider bringing at least two coolers. Cooler 1 is for frozen food items such as meats. Cooler 2 is for items accessed frequently.
Hack: Freeze any prepared foods that can be frozen to act as additional "ice" to keep coolers cold longer while using less resources.
First Aid Kit: Always pack a first aid kit. A Must - Add to the First Aid Kit medications for an upset stomach such as diarrhea.
Cleaning Station: Plan to create a space for a water jug and soap to rinse off hands, dishes, etc. to improve food safety.

Hack: Have a plan on how to securely tie-down a tent. For example: use hand weights, paracord and have extra tent stakes as it does not take much wind to lift a tent.
Hack: Create a comfortable sleeping area by using a fan that runs off the battery of your phone with an USB cord.
DIY MRE Snack Packs: Make the daily snack packs at home. Using a gallon size ziploc bag, prepare so that you bring only what you will need for that day's activities to keep you going strong. Include foods that will not melt, have protein and can hydrate. Each person in your group should have their own MRE Snack Pack. Example of favorites: Fruit unsliced such as Apples, Oranges, protein bars, beef jerky, carrots, etc.

Every Kid Outdoors Program: Free Access for Fourth Graders
Fourth-grade students and their families can enjoy free access to over 2,000 federal recreation areas through the Every Kid Outdoors Program. This initiative, supported by multiple agencies including the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service, aims to foster a love for nature and the outdoors in children at a crucial developmental stage.
Why Fourth Grade?
Research shows that children around the age of 10 are particularly receptive to learning about the environment and developing a deeper connection with nature. By offering free access to fourth graders, the program seeks to ensure that every child in the U.S. has the chance to explore and appreciate our natural heritage.
What's Included
The program provides a voucher or pass granting free entry to fourth graders, all children under 16 in their group, and up to three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks) to most federally managed lands and waters. While it covers entrance fees, additional charges for amenities like camping or boat rides are not included.

Key RV & Camper Tips Before Hitting the Road
Drive the RV or Pull the Camper. One must know how to skillfully drive a recreational vehicle or traveling with a trailer in order to be confident when on the road. Your reactions are completely different than driving a car or pulling other trailers. Practice backing up, changing lanes and parking. Make sure that you have a back-up person in your party also practice with you near home.
Understand the space when slides are retracted. The recreational home may have seemed adequate while purchasing or loading, however once filled and with the family/friends in tow you will want to make sure all still is comfortable. Check that bathroom doors can still be opened and that anything wanted can still be accessed while in travel mode.
Learn the hoses. There are two important hoses to be aware of so that you do not contaminate your RV or cause a traffic jam. Know which hose is the for Waste Water (greywater) and the hose that is for FreshWater.
