NEWS
BEAR AWARE: Officials in areas prone to bears are warning people that your fall-themed decorations which include pumpkins and squash, can actually attract bears. Wildlife Officials say that the bears right now are eating as much as possible to fill up before going into hibernation for the winter.
101 Uses for WD-40: Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds. WD-40 can keep pumpkins fresh and pest-free by spraying them with WD-40 products. The spray’s invisible coat of protection makes it difficult for bugs to feast on the gourd. The scent of WD-40, with its citrus undertones and vanilla profile, also helps deter pests. Note - If you have dogs, WD-40 is not recommended to be used as the canine may lick and digest. Call your veterinarian if so happens.
Strength Training Over Cardio: A recent Stanford University study has revealed that strength training is more effective for burning fat and building muscle than cardio. Researchers had participants partake in a 9-month exercise routine. Those who did strength training three times a week had better progress than those who did cardio or a combination of both. So there’s a bit of proof that we all need to keep hunting, fishing, and packing in all that gear… it builds muscle while losing the fat!
Blue Moon Beer has announced the release of Blue Moon Thanksgiving Seasonings. The two-pack of seasonings includes the Blue Moon Zesty Seasoning for savory dishes and the Blue Moon Pie Pint for sweet treats.
DiGiorno, as in the frozen pizza, is offering a new Thanksgiving Pizza. The pizza pie has a chewy Detroit-style crust and is topped with mozzarella cheese, cheddar cheese, turkey, sweet potatoes, cranberries, green beans, and gravy. And word on the street is this new pizza has been selling out fast!
Baskin-Robbins icecream has a new Thanksgiving inspired flavor called Turkey Day Fixin’s. The holiday flavors combined of sweet potato and autumn spice ice creams with honey cornbread pieces and swirls of cranberry sauce.

WHY COMFORT PETS DURING EUTHANASIA
SAYING GOODBYE, PUTTING PETS DOWN
Whether it is a man’s best friend, your trusty hunting dog and companion, cow dog, or family pet; saying goodbye to a pet is hard. There is no way around it. Especially pets like dogs or cats; where they’ve entered an, even more, deeper connection as they typically almost always depend on you and do so for many years. They are family.
SHOULD PET OWNERS BE PRESENT FOR EUTHANISIA?
When the date is finally set, and the time has come to say goodbye. This moment is hard, emotionally, and every person struggles with it differently. Some feel it is just too rough and feel best dropping off their beloved pet with their trusted veterinarian for euthanasia. However there is another thought on this, and that is that it is even if one of the hardest things to do… saying goodbye to a pet, part of your family; it can be very beneficial and easier for the animal if you stay. Have a good visit with your trusted veterinarian about the euthanasia process. You will what to expect and learn how having you present will keep your dog or cat calm during the final goodbyes.
According to Union Lake Veterinary Hospital, “Choosing to stay with your pet during euthanasia is best because it alleviates their stress. Having you present reduces their anxiety and fear.” In a strange way, it is also closure for you as well, helping in the grief of… That final goodbye. Tears are normal, and expected, so embrace the emotions and remember the good times with your dog, cat, horse, or any other pet that has been a part of your family and will not be forgotten.
We (Tigger & BEC) are going thru this scenario this week. Hard as it is, our beloved Mojo, the Chihuahua, who has lived to the prime age of nearly 20, we must say goodbye. The holiday photos, the snuggles, and the laughs he’s given us and will always be the quietest chihuahua to walk the planet… Mojo - we love you and will always remember you.
HOLIDAY GIFT: LEGOS FOR ADULTS
LEGO COLLECTION TOO BIG?
According to Daily Mail, an Australian couple recently decided to sell their home after their $100,000 Lego collection outgrew the home. The couple had filled multiple rooms, including a dedicated Legoroom and their garage, with their Lego Creations. As the couple only foresees their collection to continue to grow, it’s time for a larger home.
WHY do we share this story? Both Tigger & BEC are Lego fans, collectors and even buy some sets for investment purposes!
LEGOS are a terrific gift for an adult! From men to women, they aid in keeping finger dexterity while being a nostalgic pastime. The modern puzzling for a generation of people that grew up with Legos. Legos also make a wonderful gift for cancer patients as they now are offered as botanicals. The Lego Botanical Collection offers real life-like flowers that will last forever made 100% by legos. Neuropathy is a common side-effect from chemo. BEC was given various Lego Botanical Flower sets to keep her fingers nimble while she was in cancer treatment. Plus as a bonus, Legos Last Forever. AND they have a whole Outdoors Theme now too that includes cabins to campers...

NEWS
RECORD WALLEYE CAUGHT
South Dakota’s famed Lake Oahe, a reservoir inside the Missouri River water system, has produced what is speculated to be the next South Dakota state-record walleye. Aaron Schuck of Bismarck, North Dakota was fishing with a deep diving crankbait when a whopper walleye struck his plug.
Official weighing on certified scales took place at Oahe Sunset Lodge and Steakhouse by the owner Lisa Moser, located near the town of Pollock, South Dakota. Aaron Shuck’s walleye measured 33 inches in length with a heavy weight of 16.5 pounds beating a 23-year-old record!
BEC has fished this area many times, both open water and ice fishing. Two thumbs up, it is BEC Approved! Looking for a great guide with accommodations? BEC recommends Loebs Lake Oahe Guide Service out of Pollock, SD. Give Josh a call and tell him that Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' said to!

WILDLIFE TRAFFIC JAMS IN COLORADO
Tis the season that the quaint town of Estes Park, Colorado one of the entrances to the Rocky Mountain National Park is taken over by elk. Twice yearly elk migrations occur as large bunches of elk move out of the park and make a pit stop in Estes Park. Traffic jams occur as the elk cross streets or from gawking tourists trying to get pictures of these massive animals bedded down in residents' front yards to experience the golf course closed as it is a favorite hangout for the elk. The migration is not a quick one either, can take a couple of weeks as the various bunches move leisurely. The fall migration is a must-see as the massive bulls are herding the females but it is to be viewed with caution. The rut is on and the bulls can be aggressive. Check out thebendshow.com for videos of the Elk taking over Estes Park, Colorado.
MAN'S BEST FRIEND, THE DOG
Dogs are often one's first pet and are often looked upon as a member of the family. This week Jeff 'Tigger' Erhardt tests Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' on her knowledge of the four-legged, Man's Best Friend... The Dog.
A fun round of Did You Knows, Facts, and the first part of a two-part "Dog Discussion". Tigger is a cattle dog trainer, having worked with many border collies and other cattle dog breeds. These dogs are both part of the livelihood on the ranch but also become parts of the family.
DID YOU KNOW...
Did you know a dog's nose print is unique, just like a person's fingerprint.
Did you know a dog's sense of smell is extraordinary as it has as many as 300 million receptors while a human nose only as about 5 million.
Did you know dogs when sleeping curl up in a ball to protect their organs? It is a natural instinct that goes back to when they were wild, before domestication, and vulnerable to predator attacks.
Did you know that 3 (THREE) dogs survived the Titanic sinking? The dogs were in first class, including a pomeranian puppy that the owner wrapped in a blanket, acting as though it was a baby! Then another pomeranian and a Pekingese were rescued. (Sorry Jack... But Rose made it!... Barely)
Did you know the tallest dog ever was a Great Dane measuring 44" tall!Did you know a Greyhound could beat a Cheetah in a LONG Distance Race!

NEWSBOWHUNTER TAGS WORLD RECORD VELVET BULL MOOSEAfter five years of buying raffle tickets for the North American Game Warden Museum’s moose tag, Trace Armstrong of Rolette, North Dakota actually won the coveted grand prize tag!
Now the hunt was on to find a trophy bull to fill this winning Moose tag. A trophy is an understatement for what Armstrong drew his bow for on August 31st, 2023. Armstrong released his arrow at 35 yards to take down a 1,700lb Canadian bull moose still in velvet that has been green scored by an official Pope & Young representative at 173 4/8 inches and with a net score of 16 6/8th inches. The bull will be scored again after October 31st, for the dried rack requirement and if stays close to the green score it is speculated to top the Pope & Young record book which would make it the new World Record Velvet Bull Moose! Head to TheBendShow.com to see this massive beautiful trophy bull! Congrats again to Trace Armstrong!
MASSIVE BLUE MARLIN SMASHES GULF OF MEXICO RECORDSDreaming about heading south to warmer waters and partaking in some deep-sea fishing? Recently, Texas angler Scooter Anderson did just that launching out of Alabama on a 55-foot Viding offshore boat. Anderson landed an officially weighed and measured 12-foot, 1,145-pound Blue Marlin that shames not just Alabama records but all Gulf of Mexico State Records!
NFR After-Party Announces Entertainment Lineup & New LocationThe most anticipated after party of the NFR, hosted annually by Rodeo Vegas, is ringing in its 20th Anniversary with Country Music Stars Justin Moore, Corey Kent, Chayce Beckham and more at its new home, Rodeo Vegas’s new location will be part of Resorts World Las Vegas.
Rodeo World Las Vegas will also be hosting the BFO, Bullfighters Only World Champsionships at Resorts World Las Vegas!
HOSTING FAMILY & FRIENDS HASSLE FREETake it from BEC, don’t fret about volunteering to host that next gathering or if you are someone who’s always wanted to do so. The stress is what we put on ourselves, and our guests are just happy to be invited! Here are BEC’s tips for keeping it fun, cost-effective, and stress-free!
Guest List: In this day in age, it is completely okay to create a Facebook Event and invite this way. It’s highly recommended as almost everyone has at least one member in their household with a Facebook account. This then can be used for last-minute details, as well as used to build up the excitement for the date.
Location: If your home is a disarray, that’s okay! BEC uses her heated shop for fall gatherings. A bathroom is cleaned in the house near the door, but there are never any complaints about hanging out in a big open space like a shop or garage.
FOOD: As the host, find one of your favorite recipes that can be made ahead of time that covers the “Main Dish”. BEC & Tigger always make Tigger’s Ranchers Chili. It is a hit with everyone! Then say in your invite to bring a side to share! BEC leans towards main dishes that can be kept warm in a crockpot or roaster, ready to serve or be enjoyed at any time.
DRINKS: Make it BYOB (Bring Your Own Beverage) and have a case of water or two on hand. This way there’s no headache in making sure everyone is covered. Have a bag of ice handy for an ice bucket and you are good to go!
SERVING FOOD: Cover all the counters or workbenches with inexpensive throwaway table coverings. Typically only a couple of dollars. Have paper plates, napkins, and plastic silverware for easy cleanup.
ENJOY THE TIME spent with the ones you love!

NEWS
HUNTER EDUCATION PROTECTED
According to Outdoor News, President Joe Biden has signed the Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act, which protects funding for schools that provide hunter education, archery, shooting sports and other programs. The signature comes after both chambers of the U.S. Congress solidly passed the legislation that fixes language from the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 that potentially allowed the U.S. Department of Education to pull federal funding from schools that have hunter education, archery and other shooting sports programs.
FLORIDA ENCOURAGES RESIDENTS OUTDOORS
According to WFLA, News Channel 8: Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a new initiative that went into effect this week to encourage Floridians to get outside, including discounts to state parks and for obtaining hunting and fishing licenses.
The Great Outdoors Initiative was created to encourage residents to explore Florida’s state parks, recreation areas, and waterways.
The executive order directs the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to offer 50% off annual state park passes and Gold Sportsman's hunting and fishing licenses.
The following are the discounted rates that are available until Jan. 13, 2024:
Florida State Parks Family Annual Pass: $60, plus tax
Florida State Parks Individual Annual Pass: $30, plus tax
FWC Annual Gold Sportsman licenses: $50.75, plus applicable fees
FWC Five-year Gold Sportsman: $247.75, plus applicable fees
FWC Lifetime Sportsman License: Age 4 or younger- $201.50, Ages 5-12- $351.50, Ages 13 and older- $501.50, plus applicable fees
“Florida is home to some of the best state parks, waterways and recreational lands in the country, and I encourage all Floridians to get outdoors, experience our extraordinary natural resources and enjoy our fundamental right to hunt and fish,” DeSantis said. “And we are now making it more affordable for families to get outside and enjoy these wonders by offering state park passes and fishing and hunting licenses at sharply discounted rates.”
We hope other states look into doing something similar for their residents. To Learn more about the FWC head to MyFWC.com.
IDAHO GRIZZLY KILLED IN SELF-DEFENSE
According to Fox News, An elk hunter in Idaho shot and killed a grizzly bear in self-defense after the animal charged directly at him in a "surprise encounter," wildlife officials said.
The hunter was moving through heavy timber near Henrys Lake State Park the evening of September 30th, 2023, when the large adult female grizzly bear emerged from the brush a short distance away, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) said in a statement.
When the hunter, who was not publicly identified, yelled to warn his hunting partner about the bear, the grizzly rushed toward him, according to the department.
The hunter drew his sidearm and fired several times as the charging bear closed in on him, striking and killing the animal before it was able to make contact, officials said.
After killing the grizzly, the department said the hunter immediately called the Citizens Against Poaching hotline to report the incident. IDFG officers responded and conducted a thorough investigation.
It was determined by wildlife officials that the hunter acted in self-defense during a surprise encounter with the bear from a very close distance.
Officials are reminding hunters again that grizzly bears are protected under state and federal law, and that the animals may be encountered within the Greater Yellowstone and north Idaho areas.
When hunting in grizzly country, the department encouraged visitors to carry bear spray and keep it accessible, hunt with partners, look for signs of grizzly bears and retrieve meat quickly and hang it – along with other food and garbage – at least 10 feet off the ground and 200 yards from camp.
Most attacks occur by inadvertently surprising a bear at close range, according to officials, who advised visitors to make noise around creeks and thick vegetation when not hunting.
According to Fox news, This comes after earlier in the month when Rep. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., who chairs the Congressional Western Caucus, introduced legislation that would block a federal proposal to release grizzly bears in a forest area in Washington.
The legislation would force the Department of Interior to withdraw a proposed rule introduced in September that would involve actively restoring populations of the Grizzly Bears in Washington. We are following this as 2023 is shaping up to be the year of Beware of Bears.
FEATURESTEALTH UPLAND BIRD HUNTING
The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants
Feature: Rick Acker, Award-Winning Taxidermist, Expert Upland Game HunterRoughrider Game Birdshttps://www.facebook.com/roughridergamebirds
After opening weekend, pheasant hunting can seem more of a challenge at times after the birds have been chased. That is why it is important to now quiet hunt or stealth hunt upland game birds. If hunting with youth, it is understandable to still communicate the sex of a bird, rooster vs hen. However, if with experienced hunters, to be more successful consider leaving the cheers, yells and talking for once back at the vehicle.
STEALTH SILENT HUNTINGPheasants' strongest sense is sound. Quiet is key.
Pheasants see color. Dress to blend into surroundings.
Do Not be yelling "bird bird" to flush.
Do Not be yelling “Rooster” or “Hen”
Develop hand signals that all members of your group understand.
Train your dog to fully understand the shock collar being worn, so that one does not need to call for your dog.
Check your state's regulations for upland game hunting. Some states may require fluorescent orange vests and/or hats. Every year laws can change, so it is very important to know the laws before hitting the field regardless what species one is hoping to hunt or catch.

How To Make Pheasant Street Tacos & Neutralize Odors Naturally
Saturday Oct 14, 2023
Saturday Oct 14, 2023
Episode 154 DetailsPheasant season is here in the North! Tigger & BEC spent last weekend's opener sharing the time with their nephews and taking out family. Tigger of course had to rib BEC as at the last minute she did a "No-No" and decided to switch from her pump 12-gauge shotgun to her over-under; and was skunked. But it all happens to the best of us! Thankfully much of their party was limited out and most importantly fun & memories were made.
NEWSHIGH SCHOOL: FLY FISHING CLASSAn innovative English class introduced Maine high school students to fly fishing this fall. Nokomis Regional High School in Newport, Maine introduced this fall an innovative English elective class that focuses on fly fishing. The goal, to engage students by immersing them in the outdoors.
The instructor, Nick Miller, was asked by the principal if he was to teach a nontraditional class, would he be interested and if given the opportunity, what would it be. Mr. Nick Miller chose his favorite hobby, Fly Fishing.
Thus far students have been taught basics in fly fishing including going out to several bodies of water to actually fish. Later in the semester, once to chilly outside they will begin reading works such as Norman Maclean’s “A River Runs Through It” (a book made famous by the movie of same name featuring actor Brad Pitt), and transition the outdoors relatability into more of a traditional English Class.
VERMONT POACHER CAUGHT IN ACTION
After a years-long court process, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife after instances dating back three years are now able to put to rest a poaching case.
After reports of poaching by a 43-year-old male, the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife staged a dummy deer, a buck, in Northern Vermont in which Shane Philips was caught in action. According to a press release from the VDFW, Game wardens watched Shane Philips of Vermont attempt to poach the buck by using his vehicle headlights to illuminate it in the dark. After shooting the dummy buck with a crossbow, the suspect was confronted, and he fled the scene.
The suspect was tracked, arrested, and confiscated both the crossbow and vehicle. Philips has been found guilty of taking big game by 5 illegal means. This poacher must pay a fine of almost $3,000, forfeit both the vehicle and crossbow, and has lost his hunting privileges for the next three years.
YELLOWSTONE ELK STAMPEDE CAUSED BY WOLVES
Right place, right time. In a once-in-a-lifetime sighting, a wildlife photographer in Yellowstone National Park this month captured video footage of an approximately 300-head herd of elk chased by a pack of wolves.
A must-watch! The pack of about 20 wolves pursuit of the herd resulted in an elk stampede with the wolves bringing down a young cow. This video is a glimpse of nature that is rarely seen much less caught on camera. An impressive video of wildlife in action.
FEATURE
ELIMINATE ODORS NATURALLY
Banish Nasty Odors From Vehicles Naturally!
That’s the focus. With fall now here, we are all stoked for hunting season… not for fall cleaning… but if you’re like most, this is that one time of year your vehicle too. Have to make room for your hunting buddies, or maybe your 4x4 is musty smelly having sat waiting for hunting season to kick off OR your farm & ranch truck needs a little TLC. We are here to the rescue with natural ways to banish and neutralize those nasty car odors naturally. You might even want to use these tricks to remove smells from your daily ride too!
Ventilation - crack open the windows, kind of a no-brainer there. Baking Soda Magic - sprinkle on the seats & floor mats as well as the carpet, let sit for a while, and vacuum up. Citrus Freshness - place some lemons or oranges in half and leave for a day sitting in the vehicle. Dry Coffee Grounds - leave a cup or bowl in the front, back and if spills just vacuum up. Dryer Sheets - Choose your favorite scent and leave around inside the vehicle, they also help with keeping mice away too. Lastly, good old Vinegar - a great scent neutralizer and sanitizer in one, wipe down the dashboard, and steering column, and clean the inside windows with it.
RECIPE: PHEASANT STREET TACOS
What to do with some of that game meat you’re harvesting right now, that’s easy, yummy, and even fun to serve at the next family gathering or tailgate. Tacos are always a hit, so why not change it up and consider using your upland game birds! Use pheasant, quail, grouse or even rabbit or squirrel if you really want to get crazy!
Heat up your slow cooker on high, and toss in a can of your favorite enchilada sauce - red or green, and a can of chiles - mild, moderate or hot depending on your love for a little kick. Add one chopped sweet onion and mix together with your favorite taco seasoning. Add in one and a half pounds of meat and let cook on high for 4 hours.
Once the meat is cooked thoroughly, shred the meat, add it back to the slow cooker, and put on low heat. DONE, it is ready to serve whenever you are ready to eat!
Use small corn or flour tortillas, put a heavy spoonful of the saucy meat mixture then top with a little pico, a dab of avocado or guacamole and a sprinkle of cilantro… And you have Wild Game Street Tacos!

Fatal Grizzly Attack, How To Bear Prepare & Pheasant Taxidermy Tips
Saturday Oct 07, 2023
Saturday Oct 07, 2023
Episode 153 DetailsPheasant season is here! This is a pastime that we greatly enjoy as we annually take time to host family and friends which is really all about the kids! That is probably why we love Pheasant Hunting so much. With proper firearm safety, upland bird hunting is a thrilling activity that is by far one of the most rewarding when watching youth take down their first bird or an older member taking part too. It is a lifelong hunting sport. Whether using a .410, 20 gauge or 12 gauge shotgun; upland bird hunting fits the whole crew!
NEWSARKANSAS ALLIGATOR SEASONFor many across the United States, hunting for alligators in Arkansas may not have crossed one’s mind. As it turns out, since 2007 alligator hunting has been growing as both a recreational activity as well as a way to keep the species from becoming invasive in the state. This year the alligator season spanned over two the last two weekends of September. The harvest broke previous records of tagged alligators, with 202 alligators harvested. According to Outdoor Life, the alligator Arkansas population statewide is hoovering around 3,000 animals.
FATAL GRIZZLY ATTACK
Last week we reported on a scary, near-death grizzly attack near Yellowstone National Park in the Custer Gallatin National Forest. We are saddened to report that another grizzly attack happened last weekend, this one resulting in two fatalities and the loss of a dog.
According to Outdoor Life, Parks Canada officials were notified on September 29th at 8 p.m. by an emergency alert from a Garmin inReach device. The GSP alert came from within the Banff National Park in a remote area in the Red Deer River Valley. Immediately a first responders unit mobilized, however, weather conditions prevented a helicopter from flying in and the response team traveled on foot to the GPS coordinates, arriving at the scene of a double fatal grizzly attack at 1 a.m.
The first responders found two deceased individuals and their deceased dog. Also still lurking nearby the first responders encountered a grizzly bear displaying aggressive behavior, which was euthanized on site.
This is a chilling story, that no one ever wants to share. A family member of the hikers did tell CBC News that the hikers had wilderness experience, lived for being in the backcountry, and “knew the bear protocol and followed it to a tee.”
The same family member also explained that the two hikers had sent them an inReach message at 5 p.m. that evening letting the family know that they had made camp for the night. Meaning that the victims were not traveling in the woods after dark or setting up camp when the grizzly bear attacked.
A full investigation is underway as this now marks the second fatal grizzly attack in North America in 2023.
Be Bear Aware: KNOW THIS BEFORE
Carry bear spray. MUST practice to be prepared to use it immediately.
Keep a close eye out for bear signs. Be cautious near creeks or any areas with limited visibility.
ELK CALLS & COVER SCENTS: Be aware they can/or will attract bears.
Big Game is Heavy. Bring people and equipment needed to help field dress game in order to remove the meat from the kill site as soon as possible. Time is NOT on your side.
Leaving Meat Behind. If part of the meat must be left in the field for later retrieval, hang it in a tree at least 10 feet off the ground AND at least 150 yards from the gut pile. Leave in an area where it can be observed from a distance of at least 200 yards.
Before returning, observe the hanging meat with binoculars. Do NOT approach any area in question of having been disturbed or see signs of a bear in the area. Notify local FWP.
ALWAYS check with local FWP before heading into the Backcountry Wilderness of current bear activity, advise a trusted family or friend of the approximate hunting/hiking location, and campsite, and recommend wearing an SOS tracking device such as trusted units by AtlasTrax or Garmin inReach.

Roughrider Game Birds

The Do, The Do NOT For A Beautiful Game Bird Mount
Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts do to the fragile pin feathers. The pin feathers after skinning on early birds will typically fall out.
Best time to harvest a Pheasant for mounting is in November & December.
Do NOT ring the neck of pheasant roosters as this will stretch out the neck.
Cool the pheasant immediately, recommend having a cooler along to transport the bird until proper freezing.
Do not place a game bird in pantyhose, this will dry out the bird.
Double bag any game bird, removing as much air as possible, before placing in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist.

How To Enjoy Traveling New Places & A Grizzly Bear Attack
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Saturday Sep 30, 2023
Episode 152 DetailsHow is your fall looking now that colors are changing, and leaves and acorns to walnuts are dropping, have you found anything unusual? Well here in the north we’ve seen something unusual. A flower typically considered the first sign of spring has been spotted by quite a few of us. That flower is the Crocus, a simple flower with velvet-like pale purple petals. For many of us, this has been a first-ever find and has us a little confused. What have you seen?
NEWSPHEASANT FORECASTUpland bird hunting is a favorite sport for many of us. As we near the opener for pheasant season, it is always the question, how is the pheasant population? After a tough winter throughout the Upper Midwest, according to Oudoor News, it is being reported that pheasants survived and populated much better than expected. Especially those areas that had productive habitat, the pheasants flourished. The birds proved to be tough last winter, and the relatively dry spring after the hard winter made for ideal nesting and brood survival. With this positive news, hunters get ready for pheasants to fly and be ready for a successful upland bird hunting season.
GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACKAccording to Outdoor Life, earlier in September while on a deer hunt, it turned quickly into a backcountry emergency when a man was mauled by a grizzly bear south of Big Sky, Montana. While helping track an archery deer down, Rudy Noorlander, 61, a Navy Veteran, was in the Custer Gallatin National forest following trails he knew very well when the man encountered two grizzlies.
Noorlander first spotted the younger of the two and was drawing his side firearm when what he described as a 10 foot mega-grizzly pounced before the man could do anything. Noorlander tried to shoot the bear, however instead his gun misfired and as the grizzly was already on him had no time to play dead. Instead, with adrenaline pumping he punched the large bear in the nose. The grizzly continued to attack the man, ripping off his lower jaw and part of the trachea, scratching his chest open while biting a bicep and leg. Then the man continued fighting through it all and screaming, in which fellow members of the party heard the struggle.
In fear they would hit the man while aiming for the bear, the fellow hunters threw rocks at the grizzly while calling for emergency responders. Thankfully the actions worked, Noorlander survived, however now is healing from multiple major reconstruction surgeries. For example, his fibula from one leg was used to reconstruct his jaw.
A wild story of human survival, but one that needs to be shared with anyone heading into the backcountry. Hunting, hiking or seeking enjoyment; grizzly attacks have been on the rise. Know and understand what to do as well as before heading into the wilderness check with local wildlife officials of recent sightings.

And there is a new Monopoly out in time for the holidays. If you have a place they need to visit for such a trip, please share!
NEWS
BEARS ENJOY KRISPY KREME DONUTS
Anchorage, Alaska may be a likely place for bears to live in the surrounding wilderness, however did you know they are fans too of Krispy Kreme Donuts? Recently a mama bear aka a sow, along with her cub were caught red-handed devouring fresh tasty donuts. A Krispy Kreme delivery driver delivering baked goods, left the door to the van open only to return to find the Mama bear and her cub raiding the van! Local law enforcement was able to chase the bears away using loud sirens.
HOTEL TAXES, WATCH YOUR BILL!
Some hotels have been adding surprising additional ‘incidental charges’ to the hotel bill that may surprise you. Incidental Charges or sometimes called even an extra “hotel tax” or “resort fee”, are additional expenses guests may have thought were included in the hotel stay. The hotel deems these items or amenities as those that are beyond the basic room rate or standard room rate. For example, the charges could include pool use, minibar usage, parking fees, internet access as well as now we have experienced charges for daily housekeeping. Every hotel is different, but with trips to Vegas for the upcoming Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) or booking holiday travel over Thanksgiving and/or Christmas, we want all advised. The reason for the incidental charge(s) is that hotels claim to be suffering tight margins in the hospitality industry thus putting these previously absorbed costs back on the consumer. So there ya have it, beware of Hotel Hidden costs and check your bills carefully upon booking and at checkout.
FREE FOOD SAMPLER ABUSER
Many of us who have visited stores giving out free samples of some treat, may have at least once in our life or may be guilty of being an abuser of said Free Food Samples. Costco may be curbing some of that as news was released, by The Takeout, that those who are huge fans of grabbing the freebies or feel it is part of their reason for a membership may be in for a surprise if this hasn’t happened already at your local location. Costco is distributing free samples at some locations using self-serve sample kiosks, and the reason behind the change is Labor Shortage. Human product demonstrators can cost the company upwards of $15/hour and there are not a lot of people applying for the jobs. Currently, Costco kiosks in some locations are being used for samples of chips, cookies, and other pre-packaged goods. So Now You Know what else is replacing humans other than just self-checkouts or AI these days… and if you are one that often takes up a second job during the Holiday Months, it is being reported that there are fewer jobs being posted at this time for Holiday Help by nationwide retailers.

So often we praise the talents of youth who play on a field or in a gym. Recently, we learned of two high school seniors in central North Dakota attending Wishek Public School who have been stepping up this fall and setting a great example. Javen Meidinger and Trestan Lepp have been doing just that. Thus far Meidinger and Lepp have been able to fix components on the score table, build a loft in the school’s shed for extra storage, weld legs on dividing walls to stabilize better, and they have made a few carts that are being used in the shop as well as help out with other small projects. Gentlemen - you receive our Tip of the Hat and we wish you a successful future as you are already setting a great example for others.

Episode 150 DetailsWell here we go, Hard to believe we are NOW up to 150 episodes!! of chasing Tigger & BEC around The Bend. We’ve taken you down dusty roads, to switchbacks chasing elk, to fishing big waters and even taken ya’ll along into the Rodeo Arena.
AND THAT’s why you never know what’s Coming Around The Bend!
SPOTLIGHTEASY BAKING RECIPE!Desserts ANYONE can make...Have you seen the latest trend on TikTok? Forget the water, TikTok creators like @jordan_the_stallion8, have been testing out the trend. Instead Mixing a ¼ cup of Dr. Pepper soda pop to a boxed brownie mix and an egg, bake like usual and you’ve got Pop Brownies…
Well BEC hates to bust the bubble on this so-called “NEW TREND”! Our cabin master of the Dutch oven, aka Tigger, has been using soda or pop in his cakes for years when cooking over the fire! Tigger makes amazing desserts by simply melting butter on the bottom of a hot Dutch oven, adding the dry cake mix and pouring over the top a can of soda or pop, covering with the lid, and setting on the hot embers or coals. Don't forget to add those hot embers/coals on top of the lid too!!
Want a cobbler?? Toss in a can of your favorite canned fruit canned pie filling and BOOM - You have a Dutch Oven Cobbler! Tigger isn’t the only one making delicious desserts using a can of soda pop. Head to TheBendShow.com for our good friend, Kent Rollins the Cowboy Chef and another lover of the dutchoven to grab his recipe and watch his easy “HOW TO” for an easy Old Fashioned Blackberry Cobbler.

BACKPACKING FOOD THAT'S RIGHT FOR YOU
For everyone who’s dreamt of packing into the backcountry from just wanting to hike, camp, fish, or hunt. Keeping that pack light, yet filling it with food that will keep energy up while not taking up space or adding weight can be a tricky feat. BEC dives into simple, basic tips to survive that first trip. The key is to begin planning now, weeks before you head out on that trip. It’s always tempting to head online and purchase pre-packaged meals, and freeze-dried foods that claim to taste great, weigh almost nothing while the ratio of carbs or protein is needed for physical activity. The oversight comes when not having tried them first at home!
Adding in miles of physical activity first off we know often causes the body not just to burn up calories fast, but also can accelerate the process of digesting food and the need for #2 quickly (yup, we’re talking poop)!! Before being stuck on the trail with food that might be healthy but doesn’t necessarily agree with your stomach right off the bat, you’ll want to start adjusting your diet now and trying these tips BEC offers in this episode!
SAVING WEIGHT
The pack gets heavy fast, and especially when needing to stay hydrated too. Think food that can be consumed, the wrapping be burned or easily packed out and keep your energy intact. Believe BEC, it is not as easy as it sounds yet it can BE EASY to do with a little preparation and DIY R&D (aka research & development). We’re telling you, TRY everything you have before you pack your ride to head out to the backcountry. BEC was raised on a large ranch, has been a certified trail guide, packed in and elk hunted the backcountry. She is seasoned on what to know, but as one “never knows what’s truly around the bend” believes strongly you can never over-prepare. Do not make planning a headache either, have fun and make it a family adventure so that even if loved ones cannot join on this adventure they will still feel as thou they are part of the excitement!

The Backcountry - What To Know Now & Pro Fishing Walleye Tips
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Sunday Sep 10, 2023
Episode 149 Details
How did you wrap up summer, say goodbye, and Hello to Fall? For many, us included as trees have started to turn, and archery season opens, feel that Labor Day weekend is - The Start To Days of Fall.
Tigger & BEC decided to do a “Day RoadTrip” on that Sunday of the long holiday weekend. As let's be real, on this outfit there's no such thing as a "long weekend". These crazy cats took off with the truck loaded with kayaks, and fishing gear and traveled their “own backyard” meaning, stayed within state lines. Driving around a massive lake the two know very well, came upon not one but TWO bays new to them and had vacant beaches. Instead of unloading the gear, Tigger & BEC on the LAST hot day of summer jumped in the lake, enjoying just playing and swimming while soaking up the sun.
SPOTLIGHT
FAN MAIL
We received lots of “Fan Mail” after last week’s show when we talked about the recent backcountry expedition done by experienced outdoorsmen who had 3 pack horses tumble 80 feet and thankfully survive! We heard lots of comments, Want to give a shoutout to one listener, Scott Middleton from Alberta, CA - He shared photos of his Tennessee Walkers that they use on rougher terrain. Another listener texted in that he appreciated us sharing about transporting feed across state lines for horses (or any livestock). This individual was stopped and had feed checked for noxious weeds prior to being allowed to enter the national forest.
Before heading to the backcountry including the national forests or grasslands, if you are crossing state lines it is highly recommended to contact your local veterinarians as Coggins tests, health certificates or even brand releases may be required as well as contact all states you Game and Fish departments you will be traveling through to your final destination.
NEWS
PADDLEBOARD FISHING
Experienced Connecticut fisherman Eddie Carroll went viral in the fishing world when while fishing off his 12-foot paddleboard. What caused the excitement, off the coast of Madison in the Long Island Sound he hooked a large catch, so big that it began dragging him and the paddleboard. After fighting this monster fish for over an hour, he reeled up to the paddleboard a massive brown shark. Thinking smartly so folks would believe his “Catch Of The Day”, or catch of the year in our book… Eddie Carroll was able to turn on his phone to start recording as evidence to prove the catch. It was figured to roughly be an 8-foot Brown Shark, in which this fisherman did cut the line for the next lucky angler. We’ve got the video - Head to TheBendShow.com to watch this INCREDIBLE catch of a lifetime!
ANIMALS DON’T STOP FOR PASSPORT CONTROL
According to NPR - Apparently Wild or not, animals don't stop at passport control, including the reindeer that graze on the border of Norway and Russia. Forty-two crossed into Russia, and now the Norwegian government has to pay Russia for the loss of grassland - more than $4,000 per reindeer. The animals are just going where the grass takes them, I guess. So now Norway is repairing an old fence there to try to rein in their deer… like that pun.. but on a serious note…
Norwegian officials, according to Fox 5 NY, state the work of building and fixing the border fence is a challenge, as the workers have to stay on the Norwegian side of the border "AT ALL TIMES" during construction, which as you can imagine is making the work extra demanding. As for example; If a worker crossed into Russian territory, without a Russian visa, that would amount to illegal entry.
These reindeer have truly stirred the pot or shaken up a hornets' nest as Russia has sent two compensation claims thus far. One claim is for $ 4,700 USD per reindeer that crossed into Russia to graze in a nature reserve. In addition, the second claim is asking for a lump sum of nearly $4.4 million in total for the days the animals grazed in the nature reserve park, which consists mostly of lakes, rivers, forests, and marshland.
The returned reindeer belonged and were herded by the Indigenous Sami people in central and Arctic Norway. However, upon return, the animals have since been slaughtered out of fear that they may wander back to Russia.

FALL TREATS & MORE
The meteorological fall is now in full force so that only means there are going to be lots of attractive treats to be had in our grocery aisles.
SAMUAL ADAMS “WHEELHAUS DUNKEL”
The beer manufacturer Samual Adams is at it again, brewing up something special for upcoming Oktoberfest celebrations. Watch your stores as they have released a new pretzel beer named “Wheelhaus Dunkel”. The beer is said to be made with brioche-style soft pretzels and salt. This has BEC extremely curious as brioche-style buns for example typically have a sweeter flavor, so could this be a sweet & salty like beer? If you find it, let us know your thoughts! FYI - those dreaming of being in Munich, Germany for the OFFICIAL Oktoberfest, you best get your tickets booked. This years festival runs September 16th - October 3rd, 2023. However here in the USA, we tend to celebrate most of September thru the end of October! So enjoy the new Samual Adams “Wheelhaus Dunkel” as it’s being offered for only a limited time.
PUMPKIN SPICE SUITE?
If you are a fan of Pumpkin Spice and looking for a unique quick trip. Great Wolf Lodge has the rooms for you! The resort is capitalizing on the Pumpkin Spice craze by offering up hotel suites that are themed around, yes… Pumpkin Spice.
