Super Harvest Moon Eclipse: September 17-18
A super moon occurs when the moon is the closest to the earth, and appears bigger and brighter than usual. In September, the super moon will be accompanied by a partial eclipse. While a supermoon is easy to spot from wherever you are, the eclipse will be visible from much of the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
A confluence of three popular lunar events will make for an exciting night of stargazing on the night of Tuesday, Sept. 17, into the early hours of Wednesday, Sept. 18. A partial lunar eclipse will coincide with the first super moon of the year, causing part of the moon to temporarily go dark as it passes through Earth's shadow. 
 
Super Moon — October 17
The second and closest supermoon of 2024 will occur in October. During a supermoon, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is the farthest. There's no need for specialized equipment to view the moon, but a clear night sky and an unobstructed view will help.

ILLEGAL EAGLE FEATHER TRAFFICKING UNVEILED
 
 
 
 
 
FLATHEAD INDIAN RESERVATION, Mont. (KFYR) - Prosecutors say a Washington state man intends to plead guilty to helping kill some 3,600 birds, including eagles, and illegally selling their feathers. A judge issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who failed to appear in court last month. 
Such feathers are highly prized among many Native American tribes for use in sacred ceremonies and during pow-wows. The defendants are accused of selling eagle parts on a black market that has been a long-running problem for U.S. wildlife officials. Illegal shootings are a leading cause of golden eagle deaths, according to a recent government study. Immature golden eagle feathers are especially valued among tribes, and a tail set from one of the birds can sell for several hundred dollars, according to details disclosed during a separate trafficking case in South Dakota last year in which a Montana man was sentenced to three years in prison.
 
 
Prosecutors say Travis Branson and others killed the birds during a years-long “killing spree” on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana and elsewhere.
 
SPY CAMS IN VACATION RENTALS
According to the Daily Mail, 10% of vacation rentals come equipped with concealed surveillance cameras. These cameras are frequently camouflaged as ordinary items like chargers, smoke alarms, and TV soundbars. Travel experts recommend inspecting for absent screws, additional openings, and reflections that may indicate camera lenses. Rental platforms such as Airbnb enforce stringent regulations prohibiting hidden camera use.
 
BOMB WASHES UP ON BEACH
According to NBC, an old military bomb was recently found washed up on shore in California. A bomb squad was called in, confirming the explosive was inactive and then safely removed it from the beach.
 
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE: SOUTH CAROLINA TO FRANCE
Who has thrown a message in a bottle, tossed it to the sea or ocean wondering if it’ll ever be found? A South Carolina fisherman dropped a bottle in the ocean three years ago. The bottle contained a letter and ribbons. The fisherman was shocked that it made its way to France.
Have you ever found a message in a bottle? Host Rebecca Wanner aka BEC once did while fishing along the Knife River in North Dakota. The bottle was an old glass pop bottle, and the message was a typewriter typed letter and dated 20 years old.
 
CORNHOLE PLAYERS EARN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
According to Deadspin, High schoolers are securing scholarships to play cornhole at the college level. Recently, two high school seniors signed letters of intent to join Winthrop University in North Carolina as cornhole players. These scholarships will cover half of their tuition costs. Both athletes are highly regarded, earning five-star ratings, and they represent the first students to commit to a college for cornhole.

MCDONALD's UNVEILS ROBOT-RUN RESTAURANT
McDonald’s recently unveiled a robot-run restaurant with no human staff. The futuristic location is in Australia, according to News.com, and has self-service kiosks, digital menu boards and food delivered by robots. McDonald’s hopes that this new concept will streamline their operations and provide more efficient dining experiences.
We hear often about worker shortages and more use of AI as well as seeing McDonald's locations are already using kiosks in the United States, now the question is when will this become the new “norm” in the USA? Stay prepared before going with a large group and learn the new technology out now at not just McDonalds but many other restaurants too. More and more restaurants are no longer offering printed menus, and are instead moving towards a “Scan QR Code” that then directs you to a menu on the phone. Nutritionists have revealed that the ideal time to eat dinner is three to four hours before going to bed. This is because eating too close to bedtime can disrupt your body’s sugar regulation and increase the risk of diabetes and other disorders. The University of Cambridge has revealed in a new study that walking only 11 minutes per day can lower the risk of premature death by 25%. 10% of deaths can potentially be avoided with minimal daily exercise. According to Daily Mail, home insurance companies warn that displaying a “Beware of Dog '' sign can attract burglars. In January the Polar Vortex had more than an effect on the people, it also chilled the alligators too. The Gator Country Adventure Park in Beaumont, Texas had their gator’s pool ice over. The park’s alligator’s snout froze protruding above the ice for air. Alligators use a hibernation process, called brumation, to cope with the cold weather.

The four Walt Disney World Parks are Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. Disney World is not meant to be seen in ONE day. Instead, it is highly recommended to enjoy it over several days if time and money allows. This means visiting one Disney Park per day and even reserving a day in between for rest around the pool or some down time.
 
If you have never traveled to Disney World and are going with a group that includes children, we suggest booking through a trusted travel agent and one that offers travel insurance or through Disney’s booking agents and inquiring about their travel insurance. Reason being is that depending on your party size, age and the cost; peace of mind knowing that at the last minute your trip might be canceled or cut short, all the money is not lost. SNOW ICE CREAM
Americans used the polar vortex to make snow ice cream. The trend started on Tik Tok and such stars as Reese Witherspoon have all joined in the fun. The ice cream is made with snow, milk, sugar, and vanilla. People then have been topping their ice cream with nuts, cherries and chocolate syrup making Snow Sundaes.
PICKLE JUICE TO FIGHT COLD & FLU
What remedies work for cold and flu? Cleveland Clinic suggests that people battling cold and flu season drink pickle juice to feel better. The pickle juice is good for soothing sore throats, fights infections, balancing gut bacteria and prevents blood sugar spikes. The salt and vinegar in pickle juice calms inflammation and targets bacteria.

A letter mailed in 1943 to DeKalb, Illinois residents Louis and Lavena George was recently delivered to a family member after resurfacing at the local Illinois Post Office. The letter expressed condolences to the recipients on the loss of their daughter. A post office worker tracked down a relative who was then able to share the letter with the daughter of original addressees: Louis and Lavena, George.

Every state has its own regulations on hunting big game which includes elk, moose, bighorn sheep, mule deer, bear, mountain lions, etc. These regulations may change from year to year including what is involved for Non-Resident applications. Learn the rules of the states where your focus is on, then plan accordingly to be sure to meet the time constraints for applying, can save for the cost of the tags and begin planning on if this is a guided or self guided adventure.
 
FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE OUTDOORS, SPORTS & HOBBIES
Often those of us that are skilled in hunting, skiing or many other hobbies become overzealous in wanting to share our knowledge with hopeful new individuals to the activities. This especially holds true if for example you are a father wanting to show your son for the first time how to use a bow. Another great example, assisting in teaching a spouse. Frustrations can come quickly as often expectations are that another will learn quickly your often decades learned skill in the sport. What also comes into play is the accidental missing of not teaching the safety of each skill or activity too. It is highly recommended that for the very first lesson, consider hiring an outside professional or other known individual to walk through the basic fundamentals. 
Let that individual be set up for success where they can feel free to ask questions as basic as they might be and the intimidation will quickly ease. It’s important to remember, your knowledge, though vast and experienced, did not happen overnight. It was acquired through years of practice, failure and learning what works for you… Which may not be what works for another.

WHAT TO BUY HER FOR VALENTINES?Women today are thinking not about roses, candy and jewelry for Valentines. Women want Valentine's experience! They want to be surprised, an experience they do not have to plan, arrange childcare or have responsibility. Women appreciate the anticipation of a date. For example, finding little notes or receiving text messages to "clear your evening" or "calendar" and to "wear something nice". On this one day of the year, regardless if it is a new girlfriend, wife or someone special in your life; making the effort to surprise your woman with a carefree, planned evening or day means the world. BEC suggests visiting a Winery, sharing a flight of fine wines with cheese & grapes. Antiquing or visiting quaint boutiques that one drives by all the time but never stops. Starting off the morning with a surprise stop at a new coffee shop or breakfast place.
SUPER BOWL EASY RECIPES1. CHARCUTERIE BOARD: Use your own homemade sausages and jerky along with adding in a couple favorite cheeses, grapes, nuts and then complimenting it all with Mickey's Mustard! (LOVE Mickeys Mustard - You Will Too!) And don't forget the crackers.
2. PIGS IN THE BLANKET: Using your homemade sausages or store bought. Cut sausage into single serving size. Wrap each sausage with a crescent roll dough bought from the store. Cut the pre-made dough to fit the sausage size. Bake according to the dough package. 
3. 3 INGREDIENT CHILI SAUSAGES: Everyone loves little smokies! Change it up and use your own. In a crockpot mix together grape jelly and chili sauce, stir in the cut up smoked/cooked sausages and heat until hot. Ready to serve. Want spicy, add 1 tsp of finely chopped jalapeño!

How To Save Money & Easily Cook With Frozen Meats

We share tips on how to make easy recipes using the meats already in your freezer, foods that work with you rather than against you and a recap of top news headlines everyone should know about. NEWSOPERATION VIPER: ILLEGAL SNAKE TRAFFICKING RING BUSTEDFox 35, Orlando, reported in January 2023 that Florida's Wildlife Officials had arrested eight people for illegal snake trafficking. Traffickers were bought and sold, hundreds of snakes, some venomous. 
During the three-year investigation, called "Operation Viper, the Florida Fish and Wildlife commission said in a news release that nearly 200 snakes - consisting of 24 species from seven different regions of the globe - were purchased or sold by undercover FWC investigators to or from wildlife traffickers.
Wildlife trafficking ranks fourth behind drugs, weapons and humans in global activity according to the FWC. The Wildlife Conservation Society estimates illicit wildlife trafficking to be between $7.8 billion and $10 billion per year.
CANADIAN SUPER PIGS THREATEN TO INVADE US
A new wild pig problem is on the horizon officials are warning. Wild pigs are nothing new to the United States, that is a 400-plus year history of dealing with invasive wild hogs. According to the University of Saskatchewan's Canadian Wild Pig Research Project, the wild pig issue is relatively new. "We didn't have any here until the early 1980s," says Dr. Ryan Book who leads their project. "There was a big push to diversify agriculture with species like wild boars and ostriches. Wild boars were brought in from Europe to be raised on farms across Canada."
 
Fast Forward. These pigs were crossbred with wild boars and domesticated pigs. The hybridization resulted in bigger "super pigs" capable of surviving cold climates. The market for these new hogs dropped out in the early 2000s, thus some escaped operations while others were simply let free as there was no one to sell them to.
These pigs have an extraordinarily high reproductive rate and are predicted to now roam nearly 620,000 square miles of Canada, mostly in the Provinces of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Alberta. The states most affected by these Canadian Super Pigs are North Dakota, Eastern Montana and Northern Minnesota.
 
THREAT TO WILDLIFE, LIVESTOCK & HUMANS
Wild boar, razorback, feral hog, wild pig. Those are just a few of the names for one of the most destructive, formidable invasive species in the United States. Tremendous damages from these animals currently cost the United States up to $2.5 billion annually to crops, forestry, livestock, and pastures. Feral swine present great risks to human health and safety as well as they can harbor and transmit dozens of parasites and diseases.
Landowners or hunters who encounter feral pigs in North Dakota must notify the State Board of Animal Health immediately.  The shooting of feral pigs is illegal in North Dakota unless a person is protecting property or livestock.

HOW TO IMPROVE FROZEN MEATS
It becomes confusing in the store at times when you see meat nicely cut, looking fresh versus frozen. Often one assumes those may be the most nutritious or healthiest. That is not entirely true. Almost all meats are frozen at some point before put into the meat counter case, so the display is what looks nicer behind the meat counter than in the freezer aisle.
 
Don't be afraid to save a little money purchasing frozen meats. They too are very healthy and regardless if it meat you harvested or raised yourself, or meat purchased all can become nutritious meals for the family. The most important thing to watch for when cooking with meat that's been frozen is to watch when thawing for freezer burned areas. Those areas that have turned discolored from too long in the freezer. I won't break down how long is "too long" , that's for another day, but the first step is to dig in your freezer to pull out a package of meat and begin thawing.
 
Best practice for thawing is to do so in your refrigerator over a day or so, or however long it takes to become unfrozen. However we are all always in a rush so the use of a microwave or placing in a sealed plastic bag in hot water is too acceptable methods. If you fear the meat is at all a tougher cut, there are two major tricks to conquering the chewy toughness meat from beef to venison to chicken.
 
Once meat is not frozen, trim, place in a pan or sealed bag or container and graciously cover in a marinade. Simply purchase a pre-made marinade or google for some quick easy homemade marinades. Leave in the marinade for a minimum of an hour, but my best meats are when they can sit for 24 hours in the refrigerator.
 
Second tip is the actual cooking process. If you are wanting fall off the bone, consider using an instant pot for a quick turnaround time otherwise cook in your crockpot over the course of the day. If you want to fry quickly, turn your oven on at 400 degrees. Using an oven safe frying pan such as cast iron, heat the frying pan on the stove and make sure your pan is HOT. Sear all sides and then place the frying pan with meat in the oven, turning the oven down to 350. Using a meat thermometer check the meat temperature to ensure it is done to your liking.

REFLECTING ON MEMORIES 
As we have now flipped the calendar to 2024, are putting away the decorations and getting back into a life schedule again. Take the time to jot down some of those memories made over the Holidays. Christmas through New Years creates laughs and cringe-worthy moments, the lesser as time goes by are almost always looked back on as laughs too later down the road. 
Here is one that BEC wanted to share...
Favorite Holiday Memory - 20 years ago on Christmas morning, Mom (Lois Wanner) woke us all up to say there was a coyote down near the feedlot. She proved to us that Annie-Oakly still had what it takes! Grabbing her .243 lever-action from the living room game closet, first off astounding us all that her 'missing rifle' really wasn’t missing; here Mom had it kept where only SHE KNEW to find it (hidden carefully behind all the boardgames)! Off to the porch she tramped in her pjs, as we all watched out the windows. Leaning over the railing, she cracked one shot off… You can imagine as we ran out the door onto the porch to congratulate her, quick range-finding in the yardage to learn she had smoked that coyote at over 300 yards!! Now that’s a Christmas morning none of us will ever forget… or she will let us forget either!

MINNESOTA ICE FISHING
 
 
 
 
This story takes us to Lake of the Woods in Minnesota as what happened there is a great reminder of what could happen here as many head to the ice for ice fishing!
According to Valley News Live, About 50 people were rescued off Lake of the Woods on New Year’s Day when a crack in the ice separated them from shore.
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office first received a call around 2:30 pm on New Year's Day that a man went through the ice on his ATV, thankfully the man was able to get out without injuries. About half an hour later, another call came in with a report of 20-25 people stranded on the Northside of a pressure ridge that cracked open. 
The Long Point Resort began using their own boat to bring people across the open water, the sheriff’s office and Minnesota DNR joined in on the rescue using airboats and UTVs to help. By the end, Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s officials say the number was closer to 50 people rescued off the lake.
More Than 100 Ice Fishermen Rescued in Minnesota This Winter
In a press-release Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said “Most years, the ice would be thick enough by now for vehicles and wheelhouses, and we’d be seeing a steady procession of them moving north. But this year isn’t ‘most years,’ and the ice is changing constantly. It’s absolutely vital that anyone who heads out checks the thickness frequently, pays close attention to the weather, and has a plan in case the worst happens and they wind up in the water.”
Ice rescues continue to be a constant problem this winter, as ice remains very thin across much of North Dakota and Minnesota.

PRESIDENT TEDDY ROOSEVELT'S PHYSICAL EXAM
 
New Year, New You... Would you have the endurance to hike and ride a horse to pass this physical exam? Here is a history lesson that many outdoorsmen, women and adventurers may find of interest. Use this story to inspire you and raise the bar on your goals.
 
On December 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed, an Executive Order No. 989, headlined “Marine Corps Officers’ Physical Fitness.” It directed each officer of the United States Marine Corps to undergo a physical examination and a series of tests every two years.
The tests were simple. Officers would have to ride a horse 90 miles, “this distance to be covered in three days.” Officers ranked “in the grade of captain or lieutenant” were also required to walk 50 miles, with “actual marching time, including rests, twenty hours.” Seven hundred yards of this needed to be completed “on the double-time”—something like a slow jog. This test too could be spread across three days, allowing the soldiers sleep and recovery time.
 
Order 989’s rationale was spelled out bluntly: “In battle, time is essential and ground may have to be covered on the run; if these officers are not equal to the average physical strength of their companies the men will be held back, resulting in unnecessary loss of life and probably defeat.”
 
Neither the Army nor the Navy, which each got their own respective executive orders with the same test, escaped Roosevelt’s attention. “I have been unpleasantly struck,” President Teddy Roosevelt observed in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Truman Newberry, “by the lack of physical condition of some of the older officers, and even some of the younger officers.”
Roosevelt  worried that “urbanization was making us weaker”—that we were living in unhealthy cities, that we were toiling in offices rather than plowing the fields. By 1900, only 40 percent of the country worked in agriculture. 
The orders immediately kicked up complaints. As historical journal The Grog recounts, “Navy Surgeon James Gatewood complained that the endurance test would leave participants in a ‘depressed physical state.’” The Navy’s surgeon general said it could put the lives of officers over 50 at risk. As if to carry the torch for his own initiative, on January 13, 1909, Roosevelt (then 51) and a small party of Naval officers set out for a horseback ride to Warrenton, Virginia, a distance of 49 miles each way. Following a 3:45 A.M. breakfast of steak and eggs, Roosevelt, on his own steed Roswell, set out into a day marked by freezing rain, eventually returning to the White House at 8:30 P.M., that’s 16 hours and 45 minutes. Roosevelt declared the ride—yep, you guessed it—“Bully!” 
Compared to politicians of today, our 26th president, President Theodore Roosevelt, was like no other. An eastern high educated individual who traveled to the Badlands of North Dakota only to fall in love with the lifestyle there, learn to cowboy, have a 1,600 head plus cattle ranch and eventually became the leader of the Rough Riders that took San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American war. In many ways, it’s no wonder this President wanted our military to be physically fit as he himself led a strenuous life too.
 
BEC's goal for you all is to share the outdoors and western lifestyle with others. Take someone that has not hiked, fished, camped or been to a rodeo, rode a horse; share an activity you love with someone that has not done one of your favorites. Encourage others away from "urbanization" for a moment. If you are needing beginner ideas to start, almost every state has hikes planned for each season that fits that various times of the year. Encourage everyone to enjoy their "backyard" aka America the Beautiful!

Be ahead of the game, and to save on the pocket book from being hit hard all at once come camping season or gearing up for a fall hunt, buy as you go over the next few months watching the sales, overstock items and clearance aisles.

Including how BEC on several pheasant hunting trips with Tigger, family and friends was the only member to be skunked each time. It's a memory that is one now filled with giggles of a nephew shouting, "How did you MISS HIM?!" too Tigger's dad getting BEC a gift of a "rubber rooster" so that she truly wasn't "Skunked". That's what the outdoors is all about. Enjoying one another's company and remembering the funny times!
BUFFALO HUNTTigger interviews Chris (aka Cheech) Holznagel from Washburn, North Dakota on how he partook in a domestic Buffalo hunt in Nebraska. He called his dad, as we all know making memories with those we love, and the two headed south. The Holznagels packed their gear and headed to Antler J Outfitting
The hunt was bittersweet as the rifle Holznagel used was that of a recently deceased  Uncle. He took down a cow buffalo using a Remington 700 chambered in a 30-06. A story with twists, turns, and a memorable extraordinary hunt shared with his father.

SAGE NEWMAN OUTSIDE THE RODEO ARENAWhile BEC was on one of her recent “Catch BEC If You Can” ( #catchBECifyoucan ) adventures, her being a PRCA Pro Rodeo Music Director takes her to some great rodeos which leads to meeting amazing individuals paving the way in the rodeo world. This trip was no different.
Sage Newman, A PRCA World Saddle Bronc Leader on the road prior to making his 3rd Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) appearance, took time to visit with BEC (aka Rebecca Wanner). We learn there is more to this cowboy than riding broncs and making 8-second rides that score big. 
Sage Newman hails from Melstone, Montana where he grew up on his family’s ranch. When not chasing the next rodeo, this man is found back on the ranch and enjoying the outdoors. He is a humble, genuine man that always has a smile. BEC caught up with Sage after another outstanding performance and in chatting learned what he does when not rodeoing or ranching. He is enjoying the outdoors. Taking advantage of where the road leads such as getting to fish while saddle bronc riding in Alaska to looking forward to archery season now back in Montana. Hunting and fishing, enjoying the backcountry with family and friends keeps Sage Newman revived and focused for when it’s time ‘To Ride.’ Great interview that leaves one proud and happy to know there are people like us doing great things, setting examples for the younger generation. He graciously took time to hang too with BEC’s nephew Hank Wanner and made sure all of his fellow rodeo pals, fellow PRCA saddle bronc riders signed Hank’s cowboy hat as well as shook his hand. 
Thank you Sage Newman for what you are doing by setting a good example, being a role model and we here at The Bend Show will definitely be cheering loud for you wherever the road may lead and we cheered EXTRA LOUD when you competed in December in Vegas at the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (The NFR!) finishing 2nd in the World.
