REFLECTING ON MEMORIES
As we have now flipped the calendar to 2024, are putting away the decorations and getting back into a life schedule again. Take the time to jot down some of those memories made over the Holidays. Christmas through New Years creates laughs and cringe-worthy moments, the lesser as time goes by are almost always looked back on as laughs too later down the road.
Here is one that BEC wanted to share...
Favorite Holiday Memory - 20 years ago on Christmas morning, Mom (Lois Wanner) woke us all up to say there was a coyote down near the feedlot. She proved to us that Annie-Oakly still had what it takes! Grabbing her .243 lever-action from the living room game closet, first off astounding us all that her 'missing rifle' really wasn’t missing; here Mom had it kept where only SHE KNEW to find it (hidden carefully behind all the boardgames)! Off to the porch she tramped in her pjs, as we all watched out the windows. Leaning over the railing, she cracked one shot off… You can imagine as we ran out the door onto the porch to congratulate her, quick range-finding in the yardage to learn she had smoked that coyote at over 300 yards!! Now that’s a Christmas morning none of us will ever forget… or she will let us forget either!
News
MINNESOTA ICE FISHING
This story takes us to Lake of the Woods in Minnesota as what happened there is a great reminder of what could happen here as many head to the ice for ice fishing!
According to Valley News Live, About 50 people were rescued off Lake of the Woods on New Year’s Day when a crack in the ice separated them from shore.
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office first received a call around 2:30 pm on New Year's Day that a man went through the ice on his ATV, thankfully the man was able to get out without injuries. About half an hour later, another call came in with a report of 20-25 people stranded on the Northside of a pressure ridge that cracked open.
The Long Point Resort began using their own boat to bring people across the open water, the sheriff’s office and Minnesota DNR joined in on the rescue using airboats and UTVs to help. By the end, Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s officials say the number was closer to 50 people rescued off the lake.
More Than 100 Ice Fishermen Rescued in Minnesota This Winter
In a press-release Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said “Most years, the ice would be thick enough by now for vehicles and wheelhouses, and we’d be seeing a steady procession of them moving north. But this year isn’t ‘most years,’ and the ice is changing constantly. It’s absolutely vital that anyone who heads out checks the thickness frequently, pays close attention to the weather, and has a plan in case the worst happens and they wind up in the water.”
Ice rescues continue to be a constant problem this winter, as ice remains very thin across much of North Dakota and Minnesota.

PRESIDENT TEDDY ROOSEVELT'S PHYSICAL EXAM
New Year, New You... Would you have the endurance to hike and ride a horse to pass this physical exam? Here is a history lesson that many outdoorsmen, women and adventurers may find of interest. Use this story to inspire you and raise the bar on your goals.
On December 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed, an Executive Order No. 989, headlined “Marine Corps Officers’ Physical Fitness.” It directed each officer of the United States Marine Corps to undergo a physical examination and a series of tests every two years.
The tests were simple. Officers would have to ride a horse 90 miles, “this distance to be covered in three days.” Officers ranked “in the grade of captain or lieutenant” were also required to walk 50 miles, with “actual marching time, including rests, twenty hours.” Seven hundred yards of this needed to be completed “on the double-time”—something like a slow jog. This test too could be spread across three days, allowing the soldiers sleep and recovery time.
Order 989’s rationale was spelled out bluntly: “In battle, time is essential and ground may have to be covered on the run; if these officers are not equal to the average physical strength of their companies the men will be held back, resulting in unnecessary loss of life and probably defeat.”
Neither the Army nor the Navy, which each got their own respective executive orders with the same test, escaped Roosevelt’s attention. “I have been unpleasantly struck,” President Teddy Roosevelt observed in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Truman Newberry, “by the lack of physical condition of some of the older officers, and even some of the younger officers.”
Roosevelt worried that “urbanization was making us weaker”—that we were living in unhealthy cities, that we were toiling in offices rather than plowing the fields. By 1900, only 40 percent of the country worked in agriculture.
The orders immediately kicked up complaints. As historical journal The Grog recounts, “Navy Surgeon James Gatewood complained that the endurance test would leave participants in a ‘depressed physical state.’” The Navy’s surgeon general said it could put the lives of officers over 50 at risk. As if to carry the torch for his own initiative, on January 13, 1909, Roosevelt (then 51) and a small party of Naval officers set out for a horseback ride to Warrenton, Virginia, a distance of 49 miles each way. Following a 3:45 A.M. breakfast of steak and eggs, Roosevelt, on his own steed Roswell, set out into a day marked by freezing rain, eventually returning to the White House at 8:30 P.M., that’s 16 hours and 45 minutes. Roosevelt declared the ride—yep, you guessed it—“Bully!”
Compared to politicians of today, our 26th president, President Theodore Roosevelt, was like no other. An eastern high educated individual who traveled to the Badlands of North Dakota only to fall in love with the lifestyle there, learn to cowboy, have a 1,600 head plus cattle ranch and eventually became the leader of the Rough Riders that took San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American war. In many ways, it’s no wonder this President wanted our military to be physically fit as he himself led a strenuous life too.
BEC's goal for you all is to share the outdoors and western lifestyle with others. Take someone that has not hiked, fished, camped or been to a rodeo, rode a horse; share an activity you love with someone that has not done one of your favorites. Encourage others away from "urbanization" for a moment. If you are needing beginner ideas to start, almost every state has hikes planned for each season that fits that various times of the year. Encourage everyone to enjoy their "backyard" aka America the Beautiful!
BEST THINGS TO BUY NOW IN JANUARY
Fitness equipment and ‘White Sales’ aka household linens are worth a close look, but when it comes to the Outdoors there are many items to save on during the first month of 2024!
Small Kitchen Appliances - Those items that we make the Outdoors a bit more comfortable when camping with a tent, RV or camper has our attention. Watch for great discounts on 2023 overstock, closeout items with steep discounts to add to your choice of recreational fun. From countertop coffee makers to the all-in-one combos that can pressure cook, act as an oven or air-fryer. Take advantage of the sales and save big time, our suggestion is to buy now and give even as gifts later as the summer camping season nears.
Winter Clothing - Already aisles of stores are changing from winter clothing to Spring Break attire. Be purchasing now as these deals increase, and grab great deals on the brands you love for these cold dark days of winter.
Camping Gear - A New Year means new memories to be made. Previous models of tents, sleeping bags and more are starting to be closed out to make room for new trends. Be ahead of the game, and to save on the pocket book from being hit hard all at once come camping season or gearing up for a fall hunt, buy as you go over the next few months watching the sales, overstock items and clearance aisles.

Best Stories Of 2023 And Plan Your SMART New Year’s Resolution
Saturday Dec 30, 2023
Saturday Dec 30, 2023
Ringing in the New Year with a recap of the best stories from 2023. Hear about buffalo hunting and how professional athletes too take time from the rodeo arena to recharge in the outdoors. We have New Year's resolution tips too. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle!
Episode 165 Details2023 RecapThis episode Tigger & BEC dig into the BEST OF stories shared during this last year. Including how BEC on several pheasant hunting trips with Tigger, family and friends was the only member to be skunked each time. It's a memory that is one now filled with giggles of a nephew shouting, "How did you MISS HIM?!" too Tigger's dad getting BEC a gift of a "rubber rooster" so that she truly wasn't "Skunked". That's what the outdoors is all about. Enjoying one another's company and remembering the funny times!
BUFFALO HUNTTigger interviews Chris (aka Cheech) Holznagel from Washburn, North Dakota on how he partook in a domestic Buffalo hunt in Nebraska. He called his dad, as we all know making memories with those we love, and the two headed south. The Holznagels packed their gear and headed to Antler J Outfitting
The hunt was bittersweet as the rifle Holznagel used was that of a recently deceased Uncle. He took down a cow buffalo using a Remington 700 chambered in a 30-06. A story with twists, turns, and a memorable extraordinary hunt shared with his father.
Facebook: Antler J Outfitting: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100087509552641
A two-thumbs up was given to this outfitter. They treated this hunter right, and fit the hunt to the guest. Check them out on Social Media as they offer a variety of hunts from domestic buffalo to turkey to deer and more.
SAGE NEWMAN OUTSIDE THE RODEO ARENAWhile BEC was on one of her recent “Catch BEC If You Can” ( #catchBECifyoucan ) adventures, her being a PRCA Pro Rodeo Music Director takes her to some great rodeos which leads to meeting amazing individuals paving the way in the rodeo world. This trip was no different.
Sage Newman, A PRCA World Saddle Bronc Leader on the road prior to making his 3rd Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR) appearance, took time to visit with BEC (aka Rebecca Wanner). We learn there is more to this cowboy than riding broncs and making 8-second rides that score big.
Sage Newman hails from Melstone, Montana where he grew up on his family’s ranch. When not chasing the next rodeo, this man is found back on the ranch and enjoying the outdoors. He is a humble, genuine man that always has a smile. BEC caught up with Sage after another outstanding performance and in chatting learned what he does when not rodeoing or ranching. He is enjoying the outdoors. Taking advantage of where the road leads such as getting to fish while saddle bronc riding in Alaska to looking forward to archery season now back in Montana. Hunting and fishing, enjoying the backcountry with family and friends keeps Sage Newman revived and focused for when it’s time ‘To Ride.’ Great interview that leaves one proud and happy to know there are people like us doing great things, setting examples for the younger generation. He graciously took time to hang too with BEC’s nephew Hank Wanner and made sure all of his fellow rodeo pals, fellow PRCA saddle bronc riders signed Hank’s cowboy hat as well as shook his hand.
Thank you Sage Newman for what you are doing by setting a good example, being a role model and we here at The Bend Show will definitely be cheering loud for you wherever the road may lead and we cheered EXTRA LOUD when you competed in December in Vegas at the 2023 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (The NFR!) finishing 2nd in the World. Congrats!

Episode 164 DetailsNEWSWOLVES RELEASED INTO COLORADOCOLORADO, Press Release - Monday, December, 18th, 2023, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) experts released five gray wolves onto public land in Grand County in a historic effort to create a permanent, self-sustaining wolf population and fulfill voter approval to re-establish gray wolves in Colorado.
The gray wolves were captured in Oregon where CPW veterinarians and biologists evaluated them to determine if they were fit for relocation to Colorado. Criteria for release included the age, sex, health, and body condition of each animal.
Each gray wolf was weighed and measured. Staff collected genetic material – tissue and blood samples – before fitting each with a GPS satellite collar for tracking upon release by CPW staff. Then, the wolves were given vaccines and were placed in crates, and flown to Colorado for release back into the wild.
CPW will repeat the process until at least 10 - 15 wolves have been reintroduced in Colorado by mid-March 2024. As outlined in the Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan, CPW hopes to release 30 to 50 wolves over the next 3 - 5 years using wolves captured from nearby northern Rockies states from several different packs by trapping and darting them in the winter.
Gray wolves are listed both state and federally as an endangered species in Colorado by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).
Colorado Ranchers and Livestock owners have been against the reintroduction of wolves into the state. According to Ambrock Research - Other states, like New Mexico and Oregon, also have reimbursement programs. But California’s program is the only one in the nation that covers ranches for all three types of reimbursement: direct loss, indirect loss, and the use of non-lethal wolf deterrents. A close eye will be kept to see how Colorado proceeds to compensate livelihoods that may be affected by the introduction of wolves.
According to the Denver Gazette, when looking at its neighboring state Wyoming, most Wyoming wolves are designated as predators that can be shot on sight without a hunting license or permit except in the northwest part of the state, which has been designated as a trophy hunting area for wolves. The video of the first five wolves released into Colorado is below.
EAT, ENJOY WILD GAME, BEEF & MEATS
Practice Makes Perfect: Mastering Cooking Skills for Wild Game, Tougher Beef Cuts and Fish. Learn to cook comfortably to repeat success.
Hopefully, many of you have been able to get out and enjoy the outdoors this last year. Take in hikes to fishing to harvesting wild game such as deer to elk to pheasant to goose for example. As you’ve cruised the grocery store meat sections the last few months, am sure many experienced what we did. The price of items such as turkey did not drop as usual Sale Promotions occurred, instead, they increased higher. We saw whole Turkeys in our area priced from $0.98 to upwards of $1.28 right before the holidays.
Thankfully we have been having a milder winter, meaning more open ground… no blizzards yet, fingers crossed, that have led to us and many of our friends and family getting in more Outdoors action in the field hunting. We are expecting as a result to be enjoying more game meats such as venison and upland game birds, maybe goose instead of a turkey unless one did fill their wild turkey tags. This is great news in our minds! We are thankful every year for our freezers here to be filled with such as well as with ranch-raised beef.
So often we hear that one enjoyed the harvest of their wild game or fish, but then express how other family members hesitate to eat those meats or fish. Often stating “too gamey” is the biggest complaint or “too tough” on less desirable, cheaper cuts of beef. Well here’s the simple two cents of it all, or at least BEC’s two cents.
Don’t give up!! Thanks to search engine sources like Google or even AI (for example: ChatGPT, if you dare to try) have opened up doors for us all to change how we look at our food, the food preparation, and how to better serve these meats.
As in everything in life, almost all skills take practice. So just because a roast turned out bad once, doesn’t mean it always will! Give it another try. If you’ve never owned an Instant Pot for example, that was a “Game Changer” for BEC when it came to all of the meats especially known to be harder to chew, and have more fat, especially the gristle fat.
Meats: Marinade! Learn how to use the combination of prepared store-bought marinades to then the science behind making your own!
Fish: Lemon goes a long way! Rinse that fish, multiple times, and then if a stronger smell remains let the fish sit a bit in lemon juice. Pat dry before frying to get all the water off and season to your liking. Lately, BEC has been adding a dash of soy sauce while putting it on the Pit Boss Griddle or Blackstone Gridle along with a dash of pepper… YUMMY!

OUTDOOR RECREATION OUTPACES DOMESTIC ECONOMY GROWTH
The U.S. Department of Commerce just released its latest assessment of the outdoor recreation industry’s contribution to the national economy. The result? $1.1 trillion in total economic output during 2022. That’s more than oil and gas extraction, and mining, combined.
Nationwide, outdoor recreation was responsible for 2.2 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product in 2022, and five million jobs. That’s 3.2 percent of total national employment.
2 MEN INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL KILLING, SELLING & SHIPPING EAGLES
After a federal investigation revealed incriminating text messages and PayPal transactions, Travis John Branson and Simon Paul have been charged with multiple felonies for poaching bald and golden eagles in northwestern Montana, as well as selling and shipping their parts, according to Outdoorlife.com.
Back on December 7th, a federal grand jury issued an indictment in the U.S. District Court of Montana charging the two men with multiple felonies related to illegally killing, selling, and shipping parts from 3,600 birds including federally protected bald and golden eagles.
The federal Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act of 1940 prohibits any take of bald and golden eagles without a special permit from the Department of Interior.
According to the indictment, penalties for a first offense of trafficking bald and golden eagles can reach a $5,000 fine and a year in prison. Penalties are elevated for second and subsequent convictions to $10,000 in fines and two years in prison. Additionally, the penalty for conspiracy is a $250,000 fine with up to five years of prison and 3 years of supervised release. Lastly, adding on the penalty of the Lacey Act could add up to five years behind bars, supervised release, and another $20,000 fine.
The Lacey Act, signed in 1900 by President William McKinley, the Lacey Act protects plants, fish, and animals by civilly and criminally penalizing those who violate its provisions. Including prohibiting the importation of invasive or harmful species, or their introduction to the environment (for example, zebra mussels into lakes and rivers) according to Outdoorlife.com.

"BEST SMOKED MEATLOAF" by Kent Rollins
This classic comfort food, Meatloaf, is given new life as Kent Rollins mixes a spicy meatloaf that's then tossed in the smoker. How To Preserve A Game Bird For Taxidermy & The Best Unisex Gift
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Saturday Dec 09, 2023
Listener taxidermy questions answered on when, how, or what to do for a beautiful game bird trophy mount. Headline news from the field with important hunting and fishing information and gift ideas that are unisex. Gifts for both men and women. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle!
Episode 162 DetailsNEWSNEBRASKA BIG HORN SHEEPExciting times in Nebraska this hunting season. Kiersten Black at only 15 years old became the first female Nebraska resident in modern history to harvest a bighorn sheep in the state, according to Oudoorlife.com. While hunting with her dad, Kierston took down a giant, old ram with a busted-up jaw and broomed horns. Quite the accomplishment for the high school sophomore, who drew a lottery permit costing only $29 to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Kiersten has been hunting for the last five years with her father, having tagged several beautiful whitetail and muley bucks over the years. This memory will go down in the books as Kiersten Black was the only name drawn from a total of nearly 3,600 applicants as Nebraska only draws one tag and the other tag is auctioned off yearly, this year’s tag sold for $370,000. Kiersten tagged her trophy ram in the panhandle of Nebraska around the steep terrain of Chadron.
HUNTER DIES AFTER BLIND CATCHES FIRE
This news is the kind that one hates to report on, a 75-year-old hunter from Michigan lost his life when the blind he was deer hunting from started on fire believed to have been caused by a portable propane heater. When the victim was found by his grandson who was also hunting nearby, the man was already deceased and had suffered severe burns, according to Outdoorlife.com. It is unclear if the blind was a pop-up, hard-sided, or homemade structure.
Again a hard story to report, but also one that we should all take notice of as temperatures are cooling. Whether hunting from a blind or ice fishing from an ice house; this time of year does entail the use of heat sources such as a portable propane type. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is reminding outdoorsmen and women to:
Keep a battery-powered carbon monoxide detector inside any closed spaces where fuel is burning, even if there is a ventilation system.
Keep exhaust from gas-powered generators and vehicles away from open windows of cabins, RVs, and other dwellings.
Crack a window in hunting blinds, ice fishing houses and other enclosed spaces to promote air circulation.
Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: dizziness, headaches, confusion, fatigue and trouble breathing.
WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER KILLS COUGER IN SELF-DEFENSE
Last month the first cougar in Wisconsin to be killed in 115 years was done so by a bowhunter. In Buffalo County, Wisconsin, Ben Karasch had just climbed into his tree stand and spotted an adult cougar stalking him, according to Outdoorlife.com. The lion continued to creep closer to his stand and when within 15 yards, Karasch realized he was in a dangerous situation.
Cougars are protected in the state of Wisconsin, however, due to the circumstances after waving hands and yelling at the cougar which the lion stood sharing right back with its tail swishing back and forth unfazed, creeping closer. Karasch drew back, releasing an arrow after feeling that was the only option left, hitting the cougar in the shoulder. The cat ran off and immediately Karasch self-reported the incident to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Authorities came to the scene, and with Karasch were able to track the blood trail to find the lion 120 yards away. It was a two-year-old male, weighing 128 pounds and they believed to have come from the Dakotas. An investigation was done by the Wisconsin DNR and was deemed this was a self-defense scenario and there would be no charges as Karasch did the right thing in informing authorities immediately. The investigation showed that the mountain lion came within 13 yards of Karasch strapped in his treestand.
UPLAND GAME BIRD TAXIDERMY
The Do, The Do Not & Did You Know About Pheasants
Guest: Rick Acker, Award Winning Taxidermist
Owner of Roughrider Game Birds located in Lincoln, North Dakota
Upland birds taken early in the season do not make great mounts due to the fragile pin feathers. Best to mount pheasants harvested in November and December.
Do not ring the neck of a possible pheasant to mount as it will stretch the neck.
Cool the pheasant immediately.
Wrap the feet and beak in wet paper towels. Double bag the pheasant before placing in the freezer. This will keep the bird from drying out until received by a taxidermist.
Do NOT place birds in panty hose. A panty hose causes a bird to quickly dry out during freezing making it difficult, to almost impossible, to mount by a taxidermist at a later date.
IS TAXIDERMY A GOOD GIFT IDEA?
Taxidermy work on any trophy animal, fish, or bird is a very thoughtful, sentimental process. It is turning that trophy into a work of art to cherish. Giving the gift of taxidermy work must be thoroughly thought through. BEC shares how if one does not know exactly what a person would like down with their trophy to mount, a gift certificate is a better route. Find out which taxidermist the recipient favors instead or pool money together to give a gift of money towards a future wall or pedestal mount.
Taxidermy - What to consider:
- How much will this wall mount or pedestal cost?
- How long will it take to have the taxidermy work completed?
- Is there room for the desired mount? Determine if there is enough wall space or high enough ceilings as an example. A pheasant with the wings spanned will take more room than a pheasant on a perch. Shoulder mounts on big game take up a lot of space both wall width and ceiling height.
- Are there memorable tokens from the adventure that are wanted to be included in the mount? Such as the shotgun shell from the bird hunt or the rifle casing from the hunt.
UNISEX GIFT IDEA: SURECAN USA
SureCan USA produces an American-made gas can, fuel can, and water dispenser. All are in various colors to associate with gas, diesel, kerosene or water. These fuel cans are ergonomically designed to fill fuel in all vehicles or ATVs, Snowmobiles, Lawnmowers or anything else that can be frustrating as spills typically occur. The SureCan assures the spills will be no longer or at least a lot less.

How To Talk Hunting With Non-Hunters & Make Christmas A Gift Trip
Saturday Dec 02, 2023
Saturday Dec 02, 2023
Learn how to talk about hunting with non-hunters by showing patience and respect while still getting your opinions across. Are you stressed thinking of how to get home for Christmas or how to host that holiday? Consider doing a Holiday away at a central location, making Christmas a gift trip. This is Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger’ Erhardt with the radio show The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle!
Episode 161 Details
NEWS
REAL CHRISTMAS TREES MAY HAVE INSECTS
The Department of Agriculture is advising checking the trunk, branches, and needles for any signs of the lantern fly and reporting any findings immediately to the department. They are requesting that people inspect their real Christmas trees for these invasive insects. The lantern fly can cause significant damage to plants and trees, so it’s crucial to inspect your tree before bringing it indoors.
BEER SPA
BierBath is set to open in Sykesville, Maryland on December 9th. The spa features hot baths infused with hops and barley that are said to provide detoxifying benefits. After relaxing, guests can continue on to enjoy a taproom featuring 30 different beers.
UGLY CHRISTMAS TREE TREND
The Ugly Christmas Sweater has taken on a whole new look. Ugly Christmas Trees are trending in 2023. According to CBC News, people are adorning their trees with pom poms and feathers while others are opting for a Christmas Cactus or buying an ugly Christmas tree from sites like Amazon that resembles the one in the Charlie Brown cartoon.
A 15 inch Redneck Christmas Tree is selling on Amazon for $15. It’s nothing more than a toilet plunger with several Evergreen branches and on red ornament. The description reads: “Toilet plunger base with wooden handle makes a great holiday gag. Can be decorated with ornaments or left bare. Decoration only - plunger not designed for actual use.
HOW TO TALK HUNTING WITH NON-HUNTERS
From time to time we are all challenged with how to go about visiting with people that are not hunters. At times, with both sides of the fence passionate about their feelings, a heated discussion can result. But it does not have to. When sharing why you hunt with a non-hunter it is important to have patience and respect. Tigger & BEC often use the discussion as a reason to talk about wildlife conservation. How there is importance to find balance in nature. Cities are growing meaning that areas for wildlife to roam are smaller and smaller. If populations of wildlife are not managed then circumstances of disease can result. Having a calm conversation and allowing both sides to share their feelings without judgment goes a long way. Make the discussion a safe place to share, and then use it as a moment to educate. Practice patience and respect will go a long way and are more likely to have a positive conversation.
HOLIDAY LOCATION & GIFT TURNED INTO A TRIP
Dollars are tight this time of year for everyone plus there is the stress too of hosting or arranging travel to have everyone home in time. Instead of gifts, book a Christmas getaway that is not as far away for everyone! Consider looking at the map and picking a central location for all to travel to that might be easier than everyone coming “Home”.
For example, say Mom & Dad live in North Dakota but members of your family now live in places like Nebraska. Meet in the middle, and turn the holiday into a memorable trip! A location for that might be the Black Hills in South Dakota.
Search an area on the map that is between everyone, then search that area for a vacation home rental. There are places like AirBnB or VRBO as well as an assortment of other reputable vacation home rental places that will offer great alternatives. Eliminate the stress of cleaning and preparing your home, and treat everyone to an affordable getaway that is the gift. Spend time as a family checking out hiking trails, shopping in quaint towns and enjoy exploring the area together!

NEWS
NEW PUBLIC LAND ACQUISITION LARGER THAN YELLOWSTONE
According to Outdoorlife.com; outdoor enthusiasts, especially those hunters and anglers in the Northwest, will soon have access to 15,573 acres of public land in eastern Oregon. The acquisition of the Minam River Wildlife Area was highlighted in a recent press release from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which worked with state, federal, and private partners to bring the land under public ownership.
When combined with the neighboring Eagle Cap Wilderness and the Minam State Recreation Area, the acquisition stitches together a block of public land that’s larger than Yellowstone National Park. It will also improve hunting access to an additional 6,000 acres of land owned by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management.
Hunters, anglers, and other users will be able to access the Minam River Wildlife Area from April 1 to Nov. 30. It will remain closed to the public for the rest of the year. While this closure will put the area off-limits for any late-season hunting and fishing, it’s meant to protect big game on their wintering range. A grand opening celebration is currently slated for June 2024.
FLORIDA 200 POUND PYTHON
A massive 17-foot, 198-pound Burmese python was recently captured in South Florida. It is the second-largest snake ever caught in the state. The Python was caught during a cold front, making it even more unusual as snakes typically remain sedentary during colder temperatures.
FACEBOOK & INSTAGRAM SUED FOR ADDICTION
According to Newser magazine, 41 states have filed a lawsuit against Facebook and Instagram. They are accusing them of intentionally trying to make kids addicted to their platforms. The lawsuit alleges that Facebook collects data on children under 13 without parental consent. The states also claim that Facebook algorithms are designed to hook children with features like the “infinite scroll”.
TINDER ADDS NEW FEATURE
According to Verge, Tinder, the dating app, has launched a new feature called Matchmaker. It allows a member’s friends and family members to pick potential partners for them. Users review the dating candidates suggested by their loved ones. They then have the final say on who they like.
HOT TUB HEALTH BENEFITS
A new study by Coventry University reveals that soaking in a hot tub may produce the same health benefits as going for a half-hour jog. Researchers had dozens of study participants soak for 30 minutes. The participants experienced major boosts in cardiovascular levels that were comparable to running. Blood flow to their legs increased by 345% while average heart rates shot up 31 beats per minute. The participants’ blood pressure also dropped significantly.
Researchers found that a hot tub posed excellent benefits to both physical and mental health. The relaxed feeling of a hot tub is something enjoyable which makes the use of a hot tub even more desirable for improving health.

WHAT CAUSES THE WILD OR THE GAMEY TASTE IN VENISON?
The "wild" flavor of venison is directly related to what the animal eats.
Venison refers to the meat of antlered animals such as deer, moose, elk, and caribou. The 'wild' flavor of venison is directly related to what the animal eats. Corn-fed deer will have a milder flavor than those that eat acorns or sage. The 'gamey' flavor is more noticeable in the fat. Removing the fat, connective tissue, silver skin, bone, and hair during processing lessens the 'gamey' taste. However, undesirable strong flavors are can result from inadequate bleeding, delay in field dressing or failure to cool the carcass promptly.
TIPS TO HELP IMPROVE THE 'GAMEY' TASTE OF VENISON
Tenderize: Pound meat with a tenderizing tool or grind the meat.
Add Spices: Cover up the ‘gamey’ flavors with herbs like rosemary, marjoram, thyme or sage.
Rub With Fat: Add other fats to keep game meat from becoming too dry. Rub a roast with oil, butter, bacon fat, or sour cream to add moisture, richness, and flavor.
Marinades: Marinades tenderize (soften the muscle fibers) and enhance the flavor of venison. When using a marinade always include high-acid liquid like lemon or tomato juice, vinegar, or wine to soften the muscle fibers, and always remember to marinate meats in the refrigerator.
TURDUCKEN THIS THANKSGIVING OR CHRISTMAS
The Turducken, or some version of it, has been around for centuries. Multibird roasts were produced by the ancient Romans. Outside of the US & Canada, they are known as a three-bird roast. A roast using various large birds stuffed with a turkey, a goose, a pheasant, a chicken, a duck, a guinea fowl, a teal, a woodcock, a partridge, or a quail for example. They are still very popular in the United Kingdom, often substituting a turkey for a goose.
A TURDUCKEN here in the United States, made popular in 1985 by Louisiana Cajun chef Paul Prudhomme, is a stuffed boneless turkey with a boneless duck, then the duck with a boneless chicken with layers of stuffing in between. Finally, the chicken is stuffed with, (You guessed it!) stuffing (or dressing as some say it). This savory and unique main course is a delicacy on any holiday or special occasion, but Thanksgiving and Christmas is the most popular time to serve it.
BEER ENTHUSIASTS & BAKERS
We need you to weigh in on this trend that crossed BEC’s path… Beer is considered the perfect ingredient for richer chocolate chip cookies. To be even more specific, according to Yahoo Style, adding Stout Beer to chocolate chip cookie dough will enhance the flavor and balances out the sweetness. Whether one stirs in the beer or makes a reduction, the claim is that the cookies will have a deep, rich flavor. Have You Tried? Do you have a tried and true baking recipe that uses beer as an ingredient? We want to try it in the cabin kitchen! Email BendRadioShow@gmail.com

NEWS
BEAR AWARE: Officials in areas prone to bears are warning people that your fall-themed decorations which include pumpkins and squash, can actually attract bears. Wildlife Officials say that the bears right now are eating as much as possible to fill up before going into hibernation for the winter.
101 Uses for WD-40: Pumpkins, Squash & Gourds. WD-40 can keep pumpkins fresh and pest-free by spraying them with WD-40 products. The spray’s invisible coat of protection makes it difficult for bugs to feast on the gourd. The scent of WD-40, with its citrus undertones and vanilla profile, also helps deter pests. Note - If you have dogs, WD-40 is not recommended to be used as the canine may lick and digest. Call your veterinarian if so happens.
Strength Training Over Cardio: A recent Stanford University study has revealed that strength training is more effective for burning fat and building muscle than cardio. Researchers had participants partake in a 9-month exercise routine. Those who did strength training three times a week had better progress than those who did cardio or a combination of both. So there’s a bit of proof that we all need to keep hunting, fishing, and packing in all that gear… it builds muscle while losing the fat!
Blue Moon Beer has announced the release of Blue Moon Thanksgiving Seasonings. The two-pack of seasonings includes the Blue Moon Zesty Seasoning for savory dishes and the Blue Moon Pie Pint for sweet treats.

WHY COMFORT PETS DURING EUTHANASIA
SAYING GOODBYE, PUTTING PETS DOWN
Whether it is a man’s best friend, your trusty hunting dog and companion, cow dog, or family pet; saying goodbye to a pet is hard. There is no way around it. Especially pets like dogs or cats; where they’ve entered an, even more, deeper connection as they typically almost always depend on you and do so for many years. They are family.
SHOULD PET OWNERS BE PRESENT FOR EUTHANISIA?
When the date is finally set, and the time has come to say goodbye. This moment is hard, emotionally, and every person struggles with it differently. Some feel it is just too rough and feel best dropping off their beloved pet with their trusted veterinarian for euthanasia. However there is another thought on this, and that is that it is even if one of the hardest things to do… saying goodbye to a pet, part of your family; it can be very beneficial and easier for the animal if you stay. Have a good visit with your trusted veterinarian about the euthanasia process. You will what to expect and learn how having you present will keep your dog or cat calm during the final goodbyes.
According to Union Lake Veterinary Hospital, “Choosing to stay with your pet during euthanasia is best because it alleviates their stress. Having you present reduces their anxiety and fear.” In a strange way, it is also closure for you as well, helping in the grief of… That final goodbye. Tears are normal, and expected, so embrace the emotions and remember the good times with your dog, cat, horse, or any other pet that has been a part of your family and will not be forgotten.
We (Tigger & BEC) are going thru this scenario this week. Hard as it is, our beloved Mojo, the Chihuahua, who has lived to the prime age of nearly 20, we must say goodbye. The holiday photos, the snuggles, and the laughs he’s given us and will always be the quietest chihuahua to walk the planet… Mojo - we love you and will always remember you.
HOLIDAY GIFT: LEGOS FOR ADULTS
LEGO COLLECTION TOO BIG?
According to Daily Mail, an Australian couple recently decided to sell their home after their $100,000 Lego collection outgrew the home. The couple had filled multiple rooms, including a dedicated Legoroom and their garage, with their Lego Creations. As the couple only foresees their collection to continue to grow, it’s time for a larger home.
WHY do we share this story? Both Tigger & BEC are Lego fans, collectors and even buy some sets for investment purposes!
LEGOS are a terrific gift for an adult! From men to women, they aid in keeping finger dexterity while being a nostalgic pastime. The modern puzzling for a generation of people that grew up with Legos. Legos also make a wonderful gift for cancer patients as they now are offered as botanicals. The Lego Botanical Collection offers real life-like flowers that will last forever made 100% by legos. Neuropathy is a common side-effect from chemo. BEC was given various Lego Botanical Flower sets to keep her fingers nimble while she was in cancer treatment. Plus as a bonus, Legos Last Forever. AND they have a whole Outdoors Theme now too that includes cabins to campers...
