Here Is Why To Learn Important Hunting Fundamentals
Saturday Feb 08, 2025
Saturday Feb 08, 2025
Learn why to set up another for success by teaching the fundamentals first to guarantee a solid foundation to build upon. Season 5, Episode 223
WHY LEARN FUNDAMENTALS FOR THE OUTDOORS, SPORTS & HOBBIES
Often those of us that are skilled in hunting, skiing or many other hobbies become overzealous in wanting to share our knowledge with hopeful new individuals to the activities. This especially holds true if for example you are a father wanting to show your son for the first time how to use a bow. Another great example, assisting in teaching a spouse. Frustrations can come quickly as often expectations are that another will learn quickly your often decades learned skill in the sport. What also comes into play is the accidental missing of not teaching the safety of each skill or activity too. It is highly recommended that for the very first lesson, consider hiring an outside professional or other known individual to walk through the basic fundamentals.
Key Reasons Why To Learn These Fundamentals
Let that individual be set up for success where they can feel free to ask questions as basic as they might be and the intimidation will quickly ease. It’s important to remember, your knowledge, though vast and experienced, did not happen overnight. It was acquired through years of practice, failure and learning what works for you… Which may not be what works for another.
Fundamentals Are Key
Strong Foundation Is A Must
Safety First
Make a GREAT first experience to guarantee a lifetime of enjoyment!

Easy Tips for Budgeting a Group Trip Without the Awkwardness
Planning a group trip? It’s exciting—but navigating different budgets can feel like tiptoeing through a minefield. How do you ask about money without stepping on toes?
Here’s how to handle this sensitive topic with care and make your getaway a success.
Start with an Anonymous Budget Survey
Instead of asking everyone face-to-face, keep it discreet. Send a private message or use a Google survey. Example:"Hey everyone! I’m thrilled to plan our trip. Could you share a budget range privately so I can ensure the plans work for everyone?"
Travel Hacks to Keep Costs Down
Travel off-peak: Book trips in spring or fall for better deals.
Flight alerts: Sign up for platforms like Hopper, Going, or Secret Flying.
Group discounts: Look for free breakfasts, group hotel rates, or all-inclusive packages to simplify planning.
Budget Breakdown Tips
Allocate costs to key categories:
30-40%: Accommodation
20-25%: Transportation
15-20%: Food and drinks
10-15%: Activities
Build Flexibility into the Travel Plan
Incorporate “choose-your-own-adventure” slots for activities. For example:
Some may enjoy a spa day while others prefer hiking.
Plan compromises like street food nights to balance pricier meals.
Set Payment Expectations Early
Before the trip, decide:
How to split costs: Equal split or pay-your-way?
Use tools like Splitwise: This app simplifies tracking and settling expenses, keeping everyone stress-free.
With a thoughtful approach, you’ll create a trip that’s enjoyable and budget-friendly for all. Cheers to memorable adventures!

Key Developments Impacting Iconic Brands, Public Hunting, and Education
Iconic American Ammo Brands Sold to Czech Company
The iconic American ammunition brands Federal, Remington, Hevi Shot, Speer, and CCI have new ownership. Sold in November 2024, these legendary names in ammo were sold to the Prague-based Czechoslovak Group (CSG) for $2.225 billion. This acquisition marks the end of a 2.5-year process involving scrutiny and approval by U.S. regulatory bodies.
Under its new parent company, The Kinetic Group, led by CEO Jason Vanderbrink, these brands are set to thrive with long-term investments that aim to boost innovation and production. Vanderbrink states that moving away from the pressures of short-term returns will allow the brands to focus on delivering better and more reliable ammunition for consumers.
Why the Sale Happened
The ammo brands were previously owned by Vista Outdoor, a company managing a mix of outdoor and ammunition businesses. A strategic decision was made to split the two sectors due to differing business models and investor demands. Ammunition, a volatile commodity market, didn't align well with the stable growth expectations of lifestyle brands like Bushnell and Primos.
National Security Concerns Addressed
The sale raised national security concerns, prompting an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Despite opposition from some politicians, including then Senator JD Vance (now current Vice-president), the sale was cleared in June 2024. CSG emphasized its commitment to supporting U.S. military, law enforcement, hunters, and allied nations, along with its nearly 4,000 American employees.
The Future of American Ammo
With additional resources from CSG, which also owns a majority stake in Fiocchi, The Kinetic Group is poised to grow and innovate. Manufacturing plants like Federal's in Minnesota and Remington's in Arkansas will continue to play a key role in supplying high-quality ammunition for American and allied markets.

Funding Gap Threatens Federal Walk-In Hunting Access Program
The Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA-HIP), which funds walk-in hunting access on private lands, will not receive federal funding in 2025, creating challenges for hunters and conservationists. Without these funds, states cannot expand or create new access programs, leaving hunters with fewer opportunities.
Historically funded by the farm bill, the program received $50 million in 2018 but saw reduced funding with recent extensions. The 2025 farm bill extension omitted funding entirely, marking the second consecutive year without adequate support. States participating rely on these grants to incentivize private landowners to allow public hunting and improve habitats.
Existing programs will likely remain stable for now, thanks to state-level funding, but the gap limits expansion and new initiatives. Conservation leaders are advocating for Congress to include $150 million for the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program in the next farm bill. Bipartisan proposals to triple the program’s funding offer hope, though Congress has struggled to reach agreements.
The program’s benefits extend beyond hunting, generating millions in economic activity and supporting jobs. Advocates urge sportsmen to contact lawmakers to push for a farm bill that secures funding for VPA-HIP and boosts public land access.

Colleges Teaching Social Media Influencer Classes
The NY Post says an increasing number of colleges and universities are offering classes in how to become a social media influencer. The trend sees schools now taking content creation seriously as a viable career choice. The influencer marketing industry is valued at over $21 billion and is a favorite field among young people. Arkansas Tech University is even offering a "Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Media Influencing." Other universities following the trend include the University of Alabama, USC, Cornell, Duke, Chapman, and Columbia.

REAL ID Deadline, Montana’s Bison Lawsuit, and Colorado's Big-Game Draw Changes Explained
New Travel Rules: REAL ID Required by May 2025
Starting May 7, 2025, travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license to board domestic flights or enter certain federal facilities such as a federal courthouse. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005 following 9/11, sets security standards for state-issued IDs but faced years of delays.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is urging travelers to check their IDs now to avoid disruptions like missed flights. Passports and other approved forms of ID will still be accepted for travel if you don’t have a REAL ID.
To ensure you’re ready, visit your state’s DMV website for details on obtaining a REAL ID. Experts warn last-minute delays could lead to headaches for travelers as the deadline approaches. Stay ahead of the curve—check your ID today!

Montana Sues Yellowstone Over Bison Herd Management: A Battle for Livestock Protection
Montana has filed a lawsuit against the National Park Service (NPS) over its 2024 bison management plan, which increases the allowed bison population in Yellowstone from 3,000 to 6,000. Governor Greg Gianforte and state officials argue that this plan puts Montana’s livestock at risk of brucellosis, a disease spread by bison. The state claims Yellowstone has failed to manage the herd since the 1960s, and that expanding the population violates federal law.
Yellowstone, however, argues that the park can support a larger herd, citing new studies showing that elk, not bison, have been responsible for spreading brucellosis to cattle. NPS also points out that bison-human conflicts have decreased over time, and that tribal and public hunting programs have helped manage the population.
Montana contends that the federal government’s actions burden its farmers and ranchers. They accuse Yellowstone of failing to engage with the state during planning. The lawsuit adds to a long-standing conflict over bison management in the region, with Montana demanding more control to protect local agriculture and wildlife.

Colorado's Big-Game Draw System Changes: What Hunters Need to Know
Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is overhauling its big-game draw system to address long-standing issues like point creep and complexity. Starting in 2028, CPW will replace the hybrid draw with a split-draw system, dividing tags evenly between two pools: one for preference points and another for a bonus draw, which operates like a raffle. This change makes it easier for hunters with fewer or no points to get a tag but frustrates those with decades of accumulated points.
Resident hunters will still get priority, with 75% of licenses reserved for them, while nonresidents receive the remaining 25%. The overhaul also introduces a once-in-a-lifetime harvest rule for premier species like bull moose and bighorn sheep, alongside increased fees and mandatory waiting periods for certain tags.
Critics argue that the changes devalue preference points and fail to adequately address concerns about nonresident quotas. Despite the backlash, CPW says the updates aim to simplify the system and make hunting opportunities more accessible. Key policies, such as random draws for desert bighorn sheep, remain unchanged. The new rules will be revisited every 10 years, allowing room for future adjustments. Read the full list of changes HERE.

Trailblazers in Rodeo, Hunting Challenges in New York, and Colorado's Controversial Wolf Debate & Compensation Fund
Breaking Barriers: The Rise of Women in Ranch Bronc Riding
The Women's Ranch Bronc Championships (WRBC), established in 2016 by the McElroy family, began as a platform for young female athletes eager to compete in the traditionally male-dominated rodeo sport of ranch bronc riding. With a mission to empower women of all ages and backgrounds to pursue their dreams in the arena, the WRBC has grown into a renowned competition circuit known as The Trail to Cheyenne Tour. This international platform continues to break barriers, showcasing the grit and talent of women ranch bronc riders across the globe.
These women are excellent ambassadors for the western lifestyle and are a MUST SEE if ever given the opportunity! For two years in a row, Tigger & BEC (PRCA Announcer & Music Director) have had the pleasure of working the Leather & Lace New Year's Eve Party: Bull Riding, Women's Bronc Riding, and Bull Fighting in Watford City, North Dakota. The WRBC Women's Ranch Bronc Riding has become a much anticipated event during the performance. Congratulations to all of these women on paving the way for others!

New York’s Pheasant Stocking Program Faces Threat—What It Means for Bird Hunters
According to the New York Times and Outdoor Life; New York’s pheasant stocking program, which provides hunting opportunities by releasing pen-raised birds, is under threat by a proposed bill from Assembly member Linda B. Rosenthal. The program aims to give hunters the chance to chase pheasants, as wild bird populations have drastically declined due to habitat loss. Despite the argument that releasing these birds is "state-sponsored cruelty," the program is essential for maintaining hunting activities in the state. Without it, pheasant hunting in New York could cease to exist.
Though critics argue that hunting pen-raised birds is too easy, the program provides a crucial starting point for new hunters and young people. It also serves as a gateway to fostering future wildlife advocates. However, opponents, including animal welfare groups, push for an end to the practice, claiming it’s not in line with ethical hunting standards.
The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) states that the program is necessary for creating hunting opportunities, especially for beginners. If the bill passes, it could significantly reduce hunting participation in New York, affecting conservation efforts and funding for habitat restoration. If other states follow suit, it would be a setback for bird hunters nationwide.
Colorado Wolf Debate: Ranchers’ $582K in Damages
According to Outdoor Life; Ranchers in Grand County, Colorado, are facing severe financial losses due to ongoing attacks by gray wolves, and they are now asking Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) for $582,000 in compensation. This request, submitted at the end of December, is well beyond the state’s $350,000 Wolf Depredation Compensation Fund, which is intended to cover all claims for livestock losses caused by predators. If approved, the ranchers' claim would deplete the fund, leaving the state with no resources to cover future losses.
The claim comes from just three ranchers, but it reflects the growing challenges faced by those living in rural areas where wolves were reintroduced under a voter-approved program. These ranchers say the damage extends far beyond the confirmed wolf kills. They are claiming compensation for missing livestock, cattle sent to market underweight, and lower conception rates in affected herds, which they attribute to stress caused by the constant threat of wolf attacks.
The Copper Creek wolf pack, responsible for many of these incidents, was reintroduced by CPW, but the pack's presence has been devastating to local ranching operations. Despite multiple requests from ranchers to remove the wolves, CPW opted to relocate them.
With these mounting pressures, ranchers are now calling on CPW to pause the wolf reintroduction program. This plea follows months of escalating wolf attacks and frustration with how CPW has managed the situation. Ranchers argue that the state has prioritized wolves over the livelihoods of local agricultural families, putting their businesses at risk. Tensions are high, and the state's wildlife commissioners were set to meet on January 8 to discuss whether to pause or continue the program. This decision could determine the future of wolf reintroduction in Colorado and whether ranchers will be forced to continue bearing the brunt of its consequences.

Reflecting on Past Years
As we have now flipped the calendar to 2025, are putting away the decorations and getting back into a life schedule again. Take the time to jot down some of those memories made over the Holidays. Christmas through New Years creates laughs and cringe-worthy moments, the lesser as time goes by are almost always looked back on as laughs too later down the road.
Here is one that BEC wanted to share...
Favorite Holiday Memory - 20 years ago on Christmas morning, Mom (Lois Wanner) woke us all up to say there was a coyote down near the feedlot. She proved to us that Annie-Oakley still had what it takes! Grabbing her .243 lever-action from the living room game closet, first off astounding us all that her 'missing rifle' really wasn’t missing; here Mom had it kept where only SHE KNEW to find it (hidden carefully behind all the board games)! Off to the porch she tramped in her pajamas, as we all watched out the windows. Leaning over the railing, she cracked one shot off… You can imagine as we ran out the door onto the porch to congratulate her, quick range-finding in the yardage to learn she had smoked that coyote at over 300 yards!! Now that’s a Christmas morning none of us will ever forget… or she will let us forget either!
News: Ice Fishing Fun & Dangerous
MINNESOTA ICE FISHING
This story takes us to Lake of the Woods in Minnesota as what happened there is a great reminder of what could happen here as many head to the ice for ice fishing!
According to Valley News Live, About 50 people were rescued off Lake of the Woods on New Year’s Day when a crack in the ice separated them from shore.
The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office first received a call around 2:30 pm on New Year's Day that a man went through the ice on his ATV, thankfully the man was able to get out without injuries. About half an hour later, another call came in with a report of 20-25 people stranded on the Northside of a pressure ridge that cracked open.
The Long Point Resort began using their own boat to bring people across the open water, the sheriff’s office and Minnesota DNR joined in on the rescue using airboats and UTVs to help. By the end, Lake of the Woods Sheriff’s officials say the number was closer to 50 people rescued off the lake.

In a press-release Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said “Most years, the ice would be thick enough by now for vehicles and wheelhouses, and we’d be seeing a steady procession of them moving north. But this year isn’t ‘most years,’ and the ice is changing constantly. It’s absolutely vital that anyone who heads out checks the thickness frequently, pays close attention to the weather, and has a plan in case the worst happens and they wind up in the water.”
Ice rescues continue to be a constant problem this winter, as ice remains very thin across much of North Dakota and Minnesota.
President Teddy Roosevelt's Physical Fitness Test
New Year, New You... Would you have the endurance to hike and ride a horse to pass this physical exam? Here is a history lesson that many outdoorsmen, women and adventurers may find of interest. Use this story to inspire you and raise the bar on your goals.
On December 9, 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt signed, an Executive Order No. 989, headlined “Marine Corps Officers’ Physical Fitness.” It directed each officer of the United States Marine Corps to undergo a physical examination and a series of tests every two years.
The tests were simple. Officers would have to ride a horse 90 miles, “this distance to be covered in three days.” Officers ranked “in the grade of captain or lieutenant” were also required to walk 50 miles, with “actual marching time, including rests, twenty hours.” Seven hundred yards of this needed to be completed “on the double-time”—something like a slow jog. This test too could be spread across three days, allowing the soldiers sleep and recovery time.
Order 989’s rationale was spelled out bluntly: “In battle, time is essential and ground may have to be covered on the run; if these officers are not equal to the average physical strength of their companies the men will be held back, resulting in unnecessary loss of life and probably defeat.”
Neither the Army nor the Navy, which each got their own respective executive orders with the same test, escaped Roosevelt’s attention. “I have been unpleasantly struck,” President Teddy Roosevelt observed in a letter to Secretary of the Navy Truman Newberry, “by the lack of physical condition of some of the older officers, and even some of the younger officers.”
Roosevelt worried that “urbanization was making us weaker”—that we were living in unhealthy cities, that we were toiling in offices rather than plowing the fields. By 1900, only 40 percent of the country worked in agriculture.
The orders immediately kicked up complaints. As historical journal The Grog recounts, “Navy Surgeon James Gatewood complained that the endurance test would leave participants in a ‘depressed physical state.’” The Navy’s surgeon general said it could put the lives of officers over 50 at risk. As if to carry the torch for his own initiative, on January 13, 1909, Roosevelt (then 51) and a small party of Naval officers set out for a horseback ride to Warrenton, Virginia, a distance of 49 miles each way. Following a 3:45 A.M. breakfast of steak and eggs, Roosevelt, on his own steed Roswell, set out into a day marked by freezing rain, eventually returning to the White House at 8:30 P.M., that’s 16 hours and 45 minutes. Roosevelt declared the ride—yep, you guessed it—“Bully!”
Compared to politicians of today, our 26th president, President Theodore Roosevelt, was like no other. An eastern high educated individual who traveled to the Badlands of North Dakota only to fall in love with the lifestyle there, learn to cowboy, have a 1,600 head plus cattle ranch and eventually became the leader of the Rough Riders that took San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American war. In many ways, it’s no wonder this President wanted our military to be physically fit as he himself led a strenuous life too.
BEC's goal for you all is to share the outdoors and western lifestyle with others. Take someone that has not hiked, fished, camped or been to a rodeo, rode a horse; share an activity you love with someone that has not done one of your favorites. Encourage others away from "urbanization" for a moment. If you are needing beginner ideas to start, almost every state has hikes planned for each season that fits that various times of the year. Encourage everyone to enjoy their "backyard" aka America the Beautiful!

Hunting Heroism, Rare Species Milestones, and Ancient Mammoth Findings
12-Year-Old Boy Saves Father from Bear Attack on Wisconsin Hunting Trip
A Minnesota father is praising his 12-year-old son for saving his life after a black bear attack on September 6, 2024. While hunting in Wisconsin, Ryan Beierman was knocked down by a wounded bear that son, Owen, had shot earlier. The bear charged, and Ryan was left fighting for his life when 12-year-old Owen quickly shot and killed the bear with a hunting rifle. Ryan suffered several injuries, including cuts and puncture wounds, but credits Owen for his heroism. The father-son duo had extensive hunting experience, the father is proud of Owen's quick thinking and the shot that saved his father's life.

Boone & Crockett Club: Recognizes Javelina to Big Game Trophy Records
The Boone and Crockett Club has officially added javelina, or collared peccary, to its big-game trophy records—the first new species added in nearly 25 years.
The name Javelina descends from Spanish for “wild sow,” though javelina are unrelated to feral hogs, which sometimes share the landscapes they occupy.
Native to the Southwest, javelina from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico are eligible for the records once measurement standards, likely based on skull dimensions, are finalized. This decision highlights the species' growing popularity among hunters and its value to conservation efforts, especially in desert habitats.
Interest in javelina hunting has surged, with hunters reporting stable to growing populations and range expansion into northern areas like Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Biologists report that across all three U.S. states with javelina populations, nearly 58,000 hunters annually harvest an estimated 33,000 javelina. Adding javelina as a trophy species aims to elevate their conservation status, bringing attention and resources to their often-overlooked habitats. The move reflects a collaborative effort among wildlife managers and conservationists across the Southwest and Mexico.
Previously regarded as pests in some areas, the designation gives javelina greater value, encouraging responsible management. With its inclusion, javelina could impact the "North American 29" Super Slam of big-game species, though Boone and Crockett has not confirmed changes to this roster. Final details, including minimum scores for entries, are expected in the coming months.

Complete Mastodon, Wooly Mammoth, Jaw Discovered in New York Backyard
A significant paleontological discovery was made in Orange County, New York, when researchers unearthed a complete mastodon (Wooly Mammoth) jaw—first found in the state in over 11 years. The jaw, along with additional bone fragments, was discovered in a backyard near Scotchtown. The homeowner spotted two mastodon teeth protruding from the soil, which led to further excavation and the discovery of the full jaw, a rib, and a toe bone. The fossils are set for carbon dating and analysis to learn more about the mastodon’s age, diet, and habitat. This discovery adds to New York’s rich Ice Age history, especially in Orange County, which has seen over 150 mastodon finds. Experts believe the jaw will provide crucial insights into the ecosystems of the Ice Age. The jaw will be displayed at the New York State Museum in 2025. This find highlights the importance of preserving and studying natural history and encourages the public to report similar discoveries.

Be Prepared for Utility Outages
1. Test Emergency Equipment Regularly
Ensure that your backup heating equipment, portable generators, or other devices are tested and in working order before an outage occurs. This includes checking the hoses used to hook up to propane heaters such as a portable Buddy Heater!
3. Check in With Neighbors & Report Outage
Call or text neighbors to confirm the outage.
Check if anyone, especially the elderly or vulnerable, needs assistance.
A group report of the outage can prompt quicker action from utility providers.
4. Conserve Heat in Your HomeTo minimize heat loss:
Close doors to unused rooms.
Place towels under doors to block drafts.
Keep curtains closed to retain indoor heat.
How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing During a Power Outage
Frozen pipes can burst, causing costly property damage. Here’s how to protect your pipes:
Insulate Your Pipes Ahead of Time
Pipes running through unheated spaces, such as basements, garages, or external walls, are most at risk. Insulating them is the best long-term solution to prevent freezing.
Short-Term Steps to Protect Pipes
If pipes aren’t insulated, take these actions during an outage:
Open Cabinet Doors: Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks.
Let Water Trickle: Keep faucets slightly open to allow a slow, steady flow. Moving water is less likely to freeze.
Well Water Users: Plan Ahead
If you rely on a well, remember that you won’t have running water without electricity. Store an emergency water supply for drinking and household use.
Backup Power Source: Portable Generators
Having a portable generator is a reliable way to power essential appliances during an outage. Here’s what to consider:
Fuel Supply: Stock enough fuel for several days.
Proper Ventilation: Operate the generator outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
Essential Devices: Use the generator to power heaters, refrigerators, or medical equipment.
Important Safety Considerations During an Outage
Medical Needs
If you depend on electricity for medical devices, develop a backup plan with your healthcare provider. Ensure you have access to power sources or alternate locations.
Carbon Monoxide Safety
Generators, kerosene heaters, and other alternate heat sources must have proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Always:
Use generators outside.
Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups.
Never use grills, stoves, or ovens for indoor heating.

TSA Busts 91 Year-Old Holiday Traveler With Cane Sword
KDVR says a 91 year old Colorado woman recently tried to get through security at the Denver International Airport with a sword. The woman was walking with a cane when she placed it on an X-ray machine. TSA officials stopped the machine and removed the cane. They pulled it apart and determined it was a cane sword where the blade is concealed inside the core of the cane.
Army Of 50 Inflatable Santa’s Take Over Town
The NY Post says an army of 50 giant inflatable Santas has taken over residents' front lawns in Lehi, Utah. Visitors driving through the neighborhoods say The Santas just kept coming with every turn, leaving everyone laughing so hard. Residents are embracing the holiday spirit in a big way with the imposing matching decorations.
Coloradans Vote Down a Big Cat Hunting Ban: A Win for Hunters & Conservationists
Colorado voters rejected a proposed hunting ban on mountain lions, lynx, and bobcats in a significant win for hunters and conservationists. The measure, Prop 127, would have banned hunting and trapping of these animals and limited the state wildlife management experts' authority.
The proposal was seen as a potential gateway to more hunting bans and a shift away from science-based wildlife management. The ban failed by a margin of over 55%, with 1.3 million "no" votes against 1.1 million "yes" votes. The opposition, including hunters and conservationists, argued that the decision should remain with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, not through public ballots. Wildlife professionals also expressed concern that the ban could set a troubling precedent for future wildlife management decisions. This vote follows the controversial 2020 approval of a gray wolf reintroduction, showing that Colorado voters are closely watching wildlife policy.

Astronauts Banned From Eating Veggies Due To Flammable Farts
The Daily Star says astronauts have been banned from eating Brussel sprouts due to fears of flammable toots. NASA is worried the toots could cause an explosion in the confined International Space Station. Baked beans, cabbage, and broccoli are also off the menu to prevent a potential blast.

Headlines Highlighting the Outdoors & Western Lifestyle
Zombie Drones: A Glimpse Into the Future
Researchers are developing "zombie duck drones" and robot pheasants using taxidermy birds to improve wildlife research. These drones, made by combining preserved bird parts with battery-powered robots, mimic natural bird movements, allowing researchers to monitor wildlife without disturbing them.
The team at New Mexico Tech has created flying and swimming drones using taxidermy ducks and pheasants. These robots help study waterfowl and other birds without the distress caused by traditional drones. The team has tested these robots in controlled environments but now seeks permission to test them in the wild. The goal is to use these drones for less invasive wildlife observation and research.

Ontario Man Saves Wife from Polar Bear Attack
In Fort Severn, Ontario, a man displayed incredible bravery when he saved his wife from a polar bear attack early one morning. The couple had stepped outside to search for their dogs when a polar bear lunged at the woman. Without hesitation, the husband jumped onto the bear, preventing the attack but suffering severe injuries to his arm and legs.
While this courageous act of heroism unfolded, a neighbor witnessed the horrifying scene and rushed to intervene. Armed with his firearm, the neighbor "shot the bear several times," causing it to retreat. Emergency responders later found the bear nearby dead due to its injuries.
The attack is rare, as polar bear encounters with humans are uncommon, though sightings have increased due to climate change disrupting the bears' hunting patterns. As the ice melts earlier, the bears are pushed inland in search of food. Experts stress the importance of securing food waste to avoid attracting bears and recommend fighting back if attacked, as playing dead is a myth.
