Ultimate Guide to Camping Hacks and Tips
Essential Tips for Camping
Camping can be an exhilarating experience, but it also comes with its challenges. To ensure you have the best adventure possible, here are some invaluable camping hacks and tips that we have learned. This guide covers everything from packing efficiently to being ready for unexpected circumstances in the wild.
Camping: Hacks, Tips & Tricks
Packing the right way can make or break your camping trip. Here’s how to pack and be prepared.
Create a Camping Checklist: A Comprehensive list of essentials.
Hack: Flashlights & Headlamps - Test batteries, then after trip remove batteries and use painters tape to tape batteries to the lights for next use to avoid corrosion.
Ice: How to keep food cold is always an issue. Consider bringing at least two coolers. Cooler 1 is for frozen food items such as meats. Cooler 2 is for items accessed frequently.
Hack: Freeze any prepared foods that can be frozen to act as additional "ice" to keep coolers cold longer while using less resources.
First Aid Kit: Always pack a first aid kit. A Must - Add to the First Aid Kit medications for an upset stomach such as diarrhea.
Cleaning Station: Plan to create a space for a water jug and soap to rinse off hands, dishes, etc. to improve food safety.
Hack: The SureCan Utility Portable Water Station with Spigot is a GAME CHANGER and we highly recommend it. SureCan also offers an excellent SureCan fuel can that is designed for a no-mess filling of ATVs, UTVs, lawnmowers, boats and more. This product is not a sponsor of The Bend Show, and is a product we recommend.
Tent Setup: Pack along an outdoor rug for a tent or camper and implement a No Shoe policy. Will keep both areas much cleaner.
Hack: Have a plan on how to securely tie-down a tent. For example: use hand weights, paracord and have extra tent stakes as it does not take much wind to lift a tent.
Hack: Create a comfortable sleeping area by using a fan that runs off the battery of your phone with an USB cord.
DIY MRE Snack Packs: Make the daily snack packs at home. Using a gallon size ziploc bag, prepare so that you bring only what you will need for that day's activities to keep you going strong. Include foods that will not melt, have protein and can hydrate. Each person in your group should have their own MRE Snack Pack. Example of favorites: Fruit unsliced such as Apples, Oranges, protein bars, beef jerky, carrots, etc.
Camping is a fantastic way to connect with nature and unwind. By following these camping hacks and tips, you can enhance your experience, ensuring it’s safe, enjoyable, and memorable. Pack wisely, set up efficiently, cook smartly, and stay comfortable for an amazing camping adventure.

What to Know and Wear for an Amazing Farm or Ranch Experience
Essential Tips for an Engaging Farm or Ranch Visit
As the demand for experience and adventure tourism rises, the global agritourism market is experiencing significant growth. Travelers increasingly seek meaningful engagement and self-discovery, making farms and ranches popular vacation destinations. This expansion is fueled by several factors: a growing tourism industry, the ease of instant bookings, farmers and ranchers diversifying their activities, a focus on rural development, and farms and ranches leveraging the unique features of their operations and locations.
Understand Your Activity Level and Desired Involvement
Rural life is inherently physical and varies with the seasons. Determine your preferred activity level and the type of involvement you seek from your farm or ranch experience. Each season brings its unique tasks and experiences:
Spring: Involves crop planting, animal birthing (calving, foaling, lambing, kidding), and fence repairs.
Summer: Focuses on haying, rotational grazing livestock, and harvesting crops.
Fall: Continues with crop harvesting, livestock weaning, and seasonal round-ups.
Year-Round: Farms and ranches are always bustling with activity, with different chores and events depending on the season.
By understanding these seasonal activities, you can choose the best time to visit and match your interests and energy levels with the farm or ranch's ongoing operations.
Dress for the Weather
When visiting a farm or ranch, it's crucial to dress appropriately for the weather. Rural areas often experience significant temperature variations throughout the day. Mornings can be chilly, afternoons warm, and evenings cool.
Check Local Weather: Always check the weather forecast for the area you’re visiting. This will help you prepare and pack accordingly.
Layering: Dressing in layers is essential. Start with a base layer, such as a lightweight shirt, add a warmer layer like a sweater, and have a jacket on hand for extra warmth.
What to Wear Around Livestock on a Ranch or Farm?
Interacting with livestock, especially horses and cattle, requires specific attire for safety and practicality.
Long Pants: Wear durable long pants, preferably jeans, to protect your legs from scratches and bites.
Light Long Sleeve Shirt: In summer, a light long sleeve shirt offers protection from the sun and insects.
Closed-Toed Shoes: Never wear open-toed shoes around livestock. Boots with a heel are ideal, especially for horseback riding. Pair them with tall socks to prevent chafing.
Gloves: Soft leather gloves are useful for a variety of tasks and provide protection for your hands.
Long Hair: Hair can easily be caught in machinery or become irritating if blown in the face. Always have hair pulled back in a fixed position to avoid accidents such as being caught in farm machinery. Example: ponytail, braid, bun, etc.
Protect Yourself from Sun, Bugs, and Wind
Being outdoors exposes you to various elements, so it's essential to take precautions.
Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen even on cloudy days to protect your skin from UV rays.
Hat or Cap: A hat provides additional protection for your face and eyes. Sunglasses are also recommended.
Bug Spray: Use insect repellent to ward off ticks and mosquitoes, which are more prevalent near livestock and tall grass.
Wind Protection: Secure your hair with a ponytail or braid to prevent it from getting caught in farm machinery. A baseball cap or hat can also help manage wind and keep your hair in place.
Final Travel Tips For Country Life
Additional Considerations
Comfort: Prioritize comfort in your clothing choices. You'll likely be moving around a lot, so wear clothes that allow for easy movement.
Safety: Always think about safety first. Proper attire can prevent injuries and accidents.
Practicality: Choose practical clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Farm and ranch environments can be muddy and dusty.

Explore Juneteenth with Free National Park Admission & Every Kid Outdoors Program
NATIONAL PARK FREE DAY: JUNETEENTH
Celebrate Juneteenth on June 19th with free admission to all National Park Service sites that typically charge an entrance fee. It's a perfect opportunity to explore the beauty and history of our national parks without any cost barriers.
Every Kid Outdoors Program: Free Access for Fourth Graders
Fourth-grade students and their families can enjoy free access to over 2,000 federal recreation areas through the Every Kid Outdoors Program. This initiative, supported by multiple agencies including the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service, aims to foster a love for nature and the outdoors in children at a crucial developmental stage.
Why Fourth Grade?
Research shows that children around the age of 10 are particularly receptive to learning about the environment and developing a deeper connection with nature. By offering free access to fourth graders, the program seeks to ensure that every child in the U.S. has the chance to explore and appreciate our natural heritage.
What's Included
The program provides a voucher or pass granting free entry to fourth graders, all children under 16 in their group, and up to three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks) to most federally managed lands and waters. While it covers entrance fees, additional charges for amenities like camping or boat rides are not included.
Take advantage of these opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors and create lasting memories with your family and friends! GET YOUR PASS HERE!
Top RV / Camper Prep Tips for Your Next Road Trip Adventure
Key RV & Camper Tips Before Hitting the Road
Drive the RV or Pull the Camper. One must know how to skillfully drive a recreational vehicle or traveling with a trailer in order to be confident when on the road. Your reactions are completely different than driving a car or pulling other trailers. Practice backing up, changing lanes and parking. Make sure that you have a back-up person in your party also practice with you near home.
Understand the space when slides are retracted. The recreational home may have seemed adequate while purchasing or loading, however once filled and with the family/friends in tow you will want to make sure all still is comfortable. Check that bathroom doors can still be opened and that anything wanted can still be accessed while in travel mode.
Learn the hoses. There are two important hoses to be aware of so that you do not contaminate your RV or cause a traffic jam. Know which hose is the for Waste Water (greywater) and the hose that is for FreshWater.
Quick RV / Camper Last Minute Checklist & Know How To:
Light the Water Heater
Light the Furnace
Test the Battery
Fill Propane Tanks
Long Power Cords: We suggest two long cords plus adapters for 30-amp plugins, 50-amp plugins and 20-amp plugins.
Drive unit fully packed to make sure nothing falls while in motion.
Understand how to level the unit.
Now hit the road and Have Fun!

Rules & Etiquette for Gatherings, BBQs & Backyard Parties
MUST Follow Rules When Attending A Cookout:
If you were not invited by the host, DO NOT show up.
DO NOT bring extra people if not listed on the invite. (Understand there are times when unexpected family may be visiting, etc. First analyze your situation, can these extras enjoy a day or evening being "Tourists" in your town or visiting sites nearby? If not, make sure you ask the host first before ever bringing additional guests.
ALWAYS ask, "What can I bring?". Even when the answer is "no", always still bring a bag of chips or at least a gift for the host. Our "Go-To Host Gift" is a bottle of wine.
Everyone has different "House Rules". Be respectful. If you notice that shoes are taken off at the door to use the bathroom, follow suit. Same goes, if in questions when going "in-doors", always take off your shoes!
Drinks. Most gatherings in this day in age are BYOB, meaning Bring Your Own Beverage. If the party has drinks served, be respectful and drink what is offered regardless of the brand or preferences. An event is not cheap to host, so be respectful!
Bottled Water or Red Solo Cups. Finish the bottled water before opening another, and if you're afraid of your bottle or cup being lost in the party - use a black marker and write your initials or name on it.
This is a BIG start to being invited to future events and neighborhood BBQs! Have Fun!

Be Weather Aware: Understand Tornado Season
Tornado season typically runs from spring to early summer in the United States, peaking in April, May, and June. During this time, atmospheric conditions are ripe for the formation of tornadoes, powerful rotating columns of air that can cause significant damage in their path.
Identifying Tornado Risks at Home
Create a Safety Plan: Designate a safe room in your home, preferably in a basement or an interior room on the lowest level without windows. Practice regular tornado drills with your family.
Strengthen Your Home: Reinforce your home's structure by securing loose shingles, reinforcing windows, and installing storm shutters or impact-resistant glass.
Stay Informed: Invest in a NOAA weather radio or download a reliable weather app to receive alerts and updates about tornado warnings in your area.
Have a safe place by the door or common area, so that you always remember to grab your wallet, purse, etc. Incase of catastrophic damage, it is always important to have identification, a credit card, some cash and a list of phone numbers that are your primary emergency contacts in case your mobile phone is ruined.
Tornado Safety Tips While Traveling or Camping
Traveling or camping during tornado season requires extra vigilance to ensure your safety in case of severe weather.
Camping Safety Tips
Upon checking in, ask the camp host for the EMERGENCY weather storm shelter is located!
Choose the Right Campsite: Select a campsite away from trees and other potential hazards that could become projectiles in high winds. Avoid setting up camp in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
Monitor Weather Conditions: Stay informed about weather forecasts and be prepared to seek shelter in a sturdy building or designated storm shelter if severe weather threatens.
Pack Emergency Supplies: Pack essential emergency supplies, including a first aid kit, non-perishable food, water, flashlights, and extra batteries. Consider bringing a portable weather radio or a fully charged smartphone with a weather app for updates.
Safety Tips for Travelers
Plan Ahead: Check weather forecasts for your travel route and destination before hitting the road. Be prepared to alter your plans if severe weather is expected.
Stay Informed: Keep abreast of weather updates during your journey by tuning into local radio stations or using a weather app on your smartphone.
Have a Shelter Plan: Identify shelters along your route or at your destination where you can seek refuge in case of a tornado warning. If you're staying in a hotel, familiarize yourself with the hotel's emergency procedures.
Father's Day Gifts & Trips
If your idea of a Father’s Day weekend is cleaning up the yard, mowing and fixing the long overdue hole in the backyard fence. Then you are wrong. Why should the weekend not be celebrated like others such as Mother's Day?
Father's Day Gifts & Trip Ideas To Plan Now
Now there are lots of gifts out there from the Tees to the Coffee Cups that say “World’s Greatest Dad”; but my suggestion is to stay away from the typical gifts and go for something more memorable.
Take The Time, Make The Memories
Plan A Weekend Fishing Trip. Early summer fishing is often the best!
Purchase a Guided Fishing Trip as a Gift for a later date.
Campout with the whole family! If your dad is a bit older, than book him in a cabin but be sure to bring along all who can make it.
Golfing with the Guys or pitting family member teams against one another. Nothing wrong with some friendly family competition.
Brewery Tour. Plan an afternoon of touring the local Breweries, Distilleries or Wineries in your area. Often there’s live music outside, making for a fun day!
Geocaching. If you’ve not tried, you need to! It’s an adult version of a scavenger hunt. What kid or guy doesn’t like to “hunt” for something!?
Build a project together. Think about if there’s something you’ve been wanting your dad’s help with or he has been wanting yours. The time spent together focused on that task, creating something you’ll be proud of for years to come is rewarding too.
Father's Day or Guy Gifts To Buy
1. Hawaiian Shirts! Personalize or customize with family photos, favorite cows or pets.
2. Infused Wood Chips for BBQ Smoking. These are great for the BBQ cooks in the family!
3. Battery operated yard tools. Technology has come a long way with increasing power in the tools as well as the longevity in battery length. Today you can trim weeds, use power drills, hack saws and even chain saws all with the same battery. There are even battery operated power washers. Batteries alone are a great gift, just make sure you know the brand of tools the recipient is using so that they all match in chargers and batteries.

Saturday May 18, 2024
Add a Little Crunch to Your Diet with Cicadas: USA insect emergence offers a unique culinary experience. Will you try?
THE WORLD OF CICADAS
Insects have long been a part of traditional diets worldwide, with cicadas being one such edible insect. In this guide, we'll explore the fascinating world of cicadas, including their nutritional value, life cycle, and how to safely harvest, store, and prepare them for consumption.
Cicadas belong to the superfamily Cicadidae and are known for their robust bodies, broad heads, transparent wings, and distinct compound eyes. With over 3,000 known species, cicadas are divided into annual and periodical cicadas. Periodical cicadas, like Brood XIX, spend most of their lives underground and emerge every 13 or 17 years in synchronized broods.
Nutritional Value of Cicadas
Cicadas are a valuable source of nutrition, containing high levels of protein and essential amino acids. Studies have shown that cicadas contain more protein than pork and eggs, with low levels of fat and elevated levels of healthy fats like polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), according to the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension.
How To Find, Prepare and Store Cicadas
Finding cicadas requires patience and observation. They are typically found in areas with abundant vegetation, and their emergence can be observed around and after sunset. Nymphs, teneral cicadas, and mature adults can all be found during different stages of their life cycle
Before harvesting cicadas, it's crucial to consider safety measures to avoid contamination and ensure freshness. Cicadas can be stored in the freezer for up to a year, and they should be de-winged and blanched before cooking to remove any dirt or pathogens.

2 pounds jumbo shrimp, deveined, tail on
1 pound cicadas (roughly 200) newly hatched or adults

Discover expert tips on rattlesnake safety & bite prevention. Learn about antivenom availability & treatment protocols. Stay safe outdoors!
Episode 184 Details
UNDERSTANDING RATTLESNAKE BEHAVIOR & DANGER TO STAY SAFE
Rattlesnakes exhibit various behaviors influenced by their habitat and surroundings. Learning about their habits can significantly reduce the risk of an encounter turning into a dangerous situation. Understanding snake behavior & habitat is crucial for staying safe.
In recent years, it has been documented that not all rattlesnakes' tails rattles. This has been discovered in rattlesnakes in both South Dakota's Badlands and in California. Know your snakes before venturing outdoors!
Immediate Actions In Case of a Bite
In the event of a rattlesnake bite, swift action is vital. The best defense is to have a set of car keys and a designated driver on hand. Calling 911 for an ambulance or Life Flight while en route to the hospital is essential to minimize delays in treatment.
Prompt medical attention is critical to counteract the venom's effects. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms, so keeping the victim calm is paramount during transit to medical facilities.
Access to Antivenom & Treatment Protocol
Antivenom, such as CROFAB, is available in various medical facilities across the region. Understanding the availability and administration of antivenom can significantly improve outcomes for snakebite victims.
Knowing where antivenom is stocked and how to administer it can be life-saving. Hospitals can prepare the antivenom in advance, reducing treatment delays upon the victim's arrival.
Educating oneself about rattlesnake behavior, proper emergency response procedures, and access to medical treatment are crucial for minimizing the risks associated with snakebites. By staying informed and prepared, individuals can navigate outdoor environments safely and confidently.

AUCTION SALE GUIDE TO BID & WIN
10 Tips For Auction Sale Bidders
At an auction sale, you can expect a dynamic, thrilling environment where items are sold to the highest bidder. Here's what to know before you go!
Catalog: Before the auction begins, you'll typically receive or have access to a catalog listing the items up for sale. This allows you to preview the items and decide which ones you're interested in bidding on.
Registration: You'll need to register to participate in the auction. This usually involves providing identification and obtaining a bidder number or paddle.
Preview Period: There's usually a preview period before the auction starts, during which you can inspect the items up for sale. This is your chance to closely examine the items and assess their condition.
Auctioneer: The auctioneer is the person who conducts the auction. They'll start by introducing each item, provide a description, and begin the bidding process.
Bidding: Bidding starts with an opening bid set by the auctioneer. Bidders then raise their paddles or signal their bids in response. The auctioneer will continue to raise the price until there are no more bids.
Reserve Price: Some items may have a reserve price, which is the minimum price the seller is willing to accept. If the bidding doesn't reach the reserve price, the item may not be sold.
Winning Bidders: The highest bidder wins the item and is typically required to pay immediately or provide a deposit. Payment methods vary but often include cash, credit/debit cards, or certified checks.
Buyer's Premium: There may be a buyer's premium, an additional fee added to the final bid price. This goes to the auction house to cover administrative costs. Most online auctions, for example firearm or gun auctions, have these premiums applied.
Removal of Items: After winning an item, you'll need to arrange for its removal. Some auction houses provide assistance with this, while others expect the buyer to handle it themselves.
Terms and Conditions: It's important to familiarize yourself with the auction house's terms and conditions before participating. These outline important details such as payment methods, buyer responsibilities, and any additional fees. Understand exactly what you are bidding on first. If it is an online firearm or gun auction, know how you will ship and talk with your local FFL dealer first.
Now get into the action and have fun!
CALCUTTA GAMBLING; ADD EXCITEMENT TO EVENTS
What is a "Calcutta" at a Rodeo or Fishing Tournament?
In a rodeo or fishing tournament, a Calcutta is a form of betting where participants bid on the competitors or teams they think will perform the best. The bids are placed in a pool, and after the competition, the pool is divided among the winning bidders, with a portion typically going to the organizers or a designated charity. It adds an extra layer of excitement and competition to the event, as participants have a vested interest in the outcome beyond just the competition itself.
Jump in the action at the next event you attend!

Top 5 Garage Sale Shopping Secrets for Bargain Success
Arrive Early: The early bird gets the worm, and this holds true for garage sales. Arriving early gives you the best chance to snag the most desirable items before others do. Often, the best deals and unique finds are gone quickly, so aim to be one of the first shoppers there.
Bring Cash: Most garage sales operate on a cash-only basis, so it's essential to bring enough cash with you. Carry small bills and change to make transactions easier. Negotiating prices is common at these sales, so having cash on hand allows you to haggle effectively.
Be Strategic: Plan your route in advance if there are multiple sales happening in your area. Focus on neighborhoods known for hosting good sales or ones where you've had luck in the past. Use apps or websites that list garage sales in your area to map out your route efficiently.
Inspect Items Carefully: While garage sales can offer fantastic deals, it's essential to inspect items thoroughly before purchasing them. Check for any defects, damage, or missing parts. Test electronics and appliances whenever possible to ensure they work correctly. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the history or condition of items.
Negotiate Prices: Bargaining is a common practice at garage sales, so don't hesitate to negotiate the price. Start by politely asking if the seller is willing to lower the price, and be prepared to counteroffer. Keep in mind that sellers are usually looking to declutter and are often willing to haggle to make a sale. Bundling also is a GREAT way to get your bang for buck! Gather several items, then begin the negotiating, but always do so politely!
Embrace the excitement of garage sale season by shopping with confidence and scoring great bargains! Arrive early to seize the best deals, bring cash for seamless transactions, and strategically plan your route for maximum efficiency. Prioritize thorough inspections to ensure quality purchases and hone your negotiation skills to secure the best prices. Remember, politeness and bundling items can further enhance your savings and satisfaction. Happy hunting!
